Margaret McKay(Mackey)
« on: Monday 10 March 08 17:16 GMT (UK) »
Margaret McKay or Mackey arrived in Otago on the ship "Helenslee" in August 1868.
She had travelled from Scotland. She married James Burnett from Ireland about 1871.
Any information on any of the above would be welcomed or pointers as to how I could do lookups. I have no idea where she came from in Scotland or who she travelled with.
Thanks Curley

Hi Curley

I couldn't find a passenger list for the "Helenslee" 1868 to ascertain what Margaret's age might have been ?

James BURNETT married Margaret McKAY - 1871.   Unfortunately the marriage cert. (of that era) wont offer you much detail.

I did find deaths for James (1908) and Margaret (1900 - aged 50 years)  BURNETT at Northern Cemetery, Dunedin,
(in same plot - so may well be "your  people") ?

You can view details at -

   http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~shipstonz/cemeteries.html

[Click on "Dunedin City Council" link and also see "Northern Cemetery " link]:

Death records will hopefully offer you "best" information
-  order a "printout" (usually has more info than a certificate and is less expensive).   Further information and details on ordering are obtainable at -

       http://www.bdm.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/

Good luck with your search.

Thanks again.  Curley

Hi Curley

Some information available for Henry Thomas at

  http://muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/general/

[Note:  Henry Thomas is listed under "BARNETT" although there is an explanation about his surname BURNETT.   His brothers James and John are mentioned ].

Birth registrations are not "online" (they need to be sourced via an index (available at libraries etc.)  Index only gives child's name and a folio reference linked to the district in which the birth was registered.

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ has several hits in 1908 referring to James Burnett's death.

Possibly also a marriage in 1902 for James, second son of James Burnett, of North-East Valley Dunedin, to Mina, fourth daughter of Alexander Munroe.

(Unfortunately?), there's also some entries in 1899 for Whiteside Burnett - charged with assault with intent to rob and sentenced to six months.
