Robert Dawson. Was he a Mayor of Wigan?

My family has always talked about an ancestor who was once the Mayor of Wigan.  Can anyone tell me how I can confirm this?

His name was Robert J Dawson born 1870 in Pemberton.  On 1901 census he is living in Wigan with his wife Sarah Alice and two daughters Mable Lillian and Olive Mildred.
His occupation was a joiner, carpenter and builder of own means.
The family have always been told he was made a Sir Robert Dawson, however we do not know just how accurate that is.
Any help anyone?

Many thanks for link.  I have looked there before, unfortunately that information was too early.  My uncle remembers meeting him in about 1930's.  He remembers a very well dressed, well spoken man.  Again, many thanks for your reply.

I couldn't find a Robert J dawson born Pemberton in 1870 but there was a Robert George Dawson born there at that time.

Is this him ? He was a councillor and JP:

1943 - "Mar. 12.  -  Death of Mr. Robert G. Dawson, J.P., Wigan master builder and former town councillor, aged 72 years. "

Wow, thanks so much for that info.  That is absolutely him!!  His middle name of George would fit with the family tree.  His grandfather was called George!

Robert Dawson was my great grandmother's brother.  A family myth cleared up once and for all!  The added link is an was amazing addition for my family tree book.
