PEDDER, Joseph - Transported pickpocket
« on: Friday 14 March 08 08:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello all from a very very hot Adelaide.
I have a bit of a puzzle that I need help with. I have just received my husband's 3xgreat Grandfather's convict records from Tasmanian Archives and therein it states that he was 'Native' to Barnett, Herefordshire but was tried in Hertfordshire.
Joseph was a 21 year old 'bud and graft' gardener before he was sent off to Tasmania for life, the offence assisting in Highway Robbery by "picking pockets".
His 'character and disposition' was recorded as having made 'bas connections' - REALLY!!
Does anyone have this Joseph PEDDER in their family tree and where would I go to find the Court Records for his trial etc?
I shall enter him in the Look- Up section as well as I have no idea of his parentage.
Funnily enough, at his death in 1885, his eldest son had to act as executor of the ' Farmer's' estate - his eldest son being the Chief Suoperintendant of Police! Thankfully, either  his father made sure that his children stayed on the straight and narrow or they decided to not repeat the father's sins themselves!
Cheers for now - icecubes and freezer calling me!
Thanks for any help you can offer. :)

Hi

Glad you have the weather in Adelaide as its not so great down here in Hobart.  I have just began researching my family tree after finding some family documents including a copy of joseph pedders obituary and a few other bits and pieces.  I would be really greatful if you could foward any information about our mutal relo.  If you would like copies of the information i have,  i'd be glad to send them to you.  I have tried to track down his court records etc but as i am new to this i am struggling a bit.  My great grandmother was Elsie Mary (merry?) Pedder but am also struggling to find records for her so my family tree still has a chunk out of it.

Hope the sun is still shining

Best wishes

Kate

Hi Ezekiel,

Joseph was convicted at the Lent Session of the Hertford Assizes 1830 and given a death sentence, but reduced to 'life' on clemency of the Assize Judge.   He was transported on the vessel 'Southworth' on 26th June 1830 arriving VDL 19 October 1830.   Some of the documents relating to Hertford Assizes hearings are held at the Hertfordshire County Record Office.

The IGI records the christening of a Joseph PEDDER son of Joseph and Sarah PEDDER on 13July1806 at Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire.  This does not tally with the age quoted on the Transportation record but perhaps you have other documents which may help to solve the problem. A marriage for a Joseph PEDER and Sarah LONG on 18February1794 at Chipping Barnet is also recorded on IGI.

Hope this helps.

Regards   ...  Peter

Hello Kate and Peter as well,
 - Kate : I shall PM you with some info
 - Peter : Thanks for the Assizes info...I have the transportation records with those details on it and am most rgrateful to the 'clemency' of the Assize Judge - otherwise my husband and daughter would never have been!
The IGI Christening is that of our Joseph as indeed the mge for his parents, Joseph and Sarah nee Long. Thank you for your  detective work. :)
Cheers for now and Blessings,
Julie

Hi Julie,

The IGI records nine christenings at Chipping Barnet for children of Joseph and Sarah PEDDER as follows   ...    Joseph 04Dec1794 - Thomas 22Sep1799 - Ann 04Apr1802 - Ann 25Dec1803 - Joseph 13Jul1806 - Sarah 20Nov1808 - William 04Sep1814 - John 13Oct1816 - Frederick 31Oct1819.

The Hertfordshire Burial Index 1800-1850 records six PEDDER burials at St.John the Baptist church, Chipping Barnet but details of parents are not given.  These are  ...   Ann chd 19Dec1802 - Thomas child 02Oct1803 -  Joseph 12May1805 - Thomas child 15Aug1811 - William 15  16Sep1828 - John 22 08Mar1837.

Hope you can fit this info into your research.

Regards   ...   Peter

Hi Julie,

I understand that Abraham SUMMERFIELD was also involved with Joseph in the offence and was dealt with in a similar fashion and was in fact transported on the same vessel to VDL.

Hi Peter,
Yes Summerfield was an accomplice....or rather the other way around it seems and was given a trip to Oz by the powers that be.
The  ones who died young were followed in several cases by having others named for them as they came along, as was the practice in many famililes of that era. Does sometimes make it a bit hard to discern 'who was who'.
Thank you for your assistance, it is appreciated. :)

Hi great to hear from you.  Since our last post which was some time ago we have found out a great deal about Joseph.  It would be great to compare notes and possibly fill in some gaps.  I am Josephs GGGGranddaughter, my GGGrandfather being Frederick.  I live in Hobart so if you are based elsewhere I could send you some photos of of the farm building he rented at Kangaroom point, the house he died in and his tombstone in the cemetary at Rokeby.  I have had a bit of trouble accessing posts on this site so you can contact me more easily at  Email addy removed in accordance with RootsChat's privacy policy.  Please use PERSONAL MESSAGING system to exchange private information.  You will be able to use this as soon as you make at least 3 posts

Hope to hear from you soon
