Which Dalton
« on: Sunday 16 March 08 18:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Maria Farkinson appears on the census (51-71) as being born at Dalton, Yorkshire ca 1805, but which one?

She was married at Darlington in 1831 to William Re(a)dman, they lived at Eaglescliffe, Thornaby & Stockton before settling in Stranton, Hartlepool.

I'm trying to find a baptism but don't know which Dalton to check as there's a few in Yorkshire.

A tree on ancestry has her maiden name as Ferguson, but the parish register print i've got say's Farkinson.

Any ideas.

Cheers

Jay

Hi Jay,

I think it might well be worth checking Dalton on Tees:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/Croftontees/index.html

Following that .. Dalton near Kirkby Ravensworth ..

I would most certainly go with the top first though.

Kindest regards,

Pels

Hello Heidi

William and Maria are also my 4 x great grandparents.

Have you found an alternative marriage for them other than William Redman and Maria Farkinson @ Darlington 16/10/1831?  I was never convinced 'Farkinson' was correct, and from my research have found Maria maiden name was Ferguson.

Maria was the daughter of John Ferguson and Elizabeth Smith, born at Dalton on Tees and baptised at Croft on Tees 12/5/1805.  William was the son of Thomas Readman and Mary Shemelds, born and baptised at Skelton.

Happy to exchange research etc.

Jay

PS I think you might be on my DNA matches on Ancestry if your using the same username

Hi

Yes this is my Ancestry name too! What is yours?
Have you got sources for Williams Mother? I'm torn between her and Margaret Dale but it's been a while since I tried it again so plan on going back over Thomas and his spouse tonight.

Maria is most definitely Ferguson but maybe mis transcribed as Farkinson?

Drop me a message on Ancestry any time. What relation does it show that we likely are?

Hi

I cant find anything to suggest a connection to a Mary Shemelds but plenty to connect him to Margaret Dale. I've found the marriage to Margaret and records for their children too x

There is always the possibility of there being two Thomas Readman but I think I'm on the right track x

Hi again

William was consistent with his age and place of birth on the census.

My research leads to his baptism at Skelton 28/12/1812, his DOB is given in the register as 18/8/1801 and his parents Thomas and Mary.

I've had a quick look at Thomas Readman and Margaret Dale but they look to be having children around Egton/Glaisdale and I can't see that they have any connection to Skelton.  What have you found that connects Margaret Dale?

On Ancestry we are shown in the 4th to 6th cousin range, as we are both 4 x great grandchildren of William and Maria then we are 5th cousins.  I'll drop you a message on Ancestry.

Going back to Maria Ferguson, the entry in the parish register is Maria Farkinson so it's not a transcription error.  Her marriage to William was in the York Herald and also the Newcastle Chronicle where her name is given as Mary Parkinson.  Neither of these are right and she's definatelty Maria Ferguson.
