Can't find Sam Broadbent's dad
« on: Monday 17 March 08 17:58 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to follow the line of my GGGrandad Sam Broadbent.

I have copies of the census he is on, from 1841 to 1871 and believe he died in 1881.
The censuses of 1861 and 1871 show him as born in 1813 in Lisbon ,Portugal and this is where I have a problem.

Hoping that his father was connected with the services fighting in the Peninsular Wars, I searched the Regimental and Chaplain's Birth records at Manchester Records Office but there is no record of his birth, nor of any Broadbent looking likely.
Today on the IGI Family search site I found his marriage to Elizabeth Stansfield and now have a copy of that from  microfilm for St Michael's Church Ashton under Lyne on 4 Jan 1843. Unfortunately, this doesn't show their fathers' names, as I was hoping it would.

Can anyone suggest anywhere else I could look to find more details ?

Thanks

Why not go to National Archives Quick search and put in Broadbent, then under advanced search put a date range of 1780 to 1820 and armed services,it brings up 23 Broadbent soldiers just possible one may be his dad if you can guess where the famliy is from ?
is his father not given on a full marriage certificate bought from the Registrar ?

Thanks SuzyF

I hadn't tried National Archives (I am new at all this <g>) and will check out all the references later.
No idea where his dad is from, tho son Sam settled in Oldham and all the descendants are from there and still live there.
No, his father isn't mentioned on the parish birth record; neither is his wife's, as I was hoping. It was about 18 months before the "proper" marriage certificates came in, unfortunately.

Another possibility is that he was christened after his family returned to England.Sue
