BMD lookup please
« on: Monday 17 March 08 22:38 GMT (UK) »
Hopefully someone can shed light on a mystery.

Matthew Young dob 23/1/1866 married Elizabeth Crichton dob 8/7/68 on 18th Jan 1889.

Problem - family talk of a son Thomas who died aged 4 1/2 BUT one family member has a birth certificate for 21/11 /1889 and in records office I found a death certificate for 15/5/1904 which mentions the age of 4 1/2 (Dates just don't correspond!).  No mention of Thomas in the Auchtergaven 1901 census with other family members.  Could there have been 2 Thomas', both of whom who died?

Hi
According to Scotlandspeople a Thomas Young died in Auchtergaven in 1894 age 5,  (you can download the certificate) also there doesn't appear to be a second Thomas Young born in Auchtergaven between 1894 and 1904. I don't know about a death in 1904 but no Thomas Young of any age died in Perthshire in 1904

So he should appear on the 1891 census?

He does

1891 census  - Cairneyhill, Auchtergavan

Matthew H Young 25 Head
Elizabeth Young 23 wife
Thomas Young 1 son
David C Young 3mo son
Margaret Crichton 23 sister-in-law
Margaret McGregor 46 Mother-in-law

Margaret McGregor was born St Kilbert ?, Midlothian all the rest in Auchtergavan.  I'm not sure without looking at the actual image what St Kilbert is meant to be, possibly St Cuthbert

thanks so very much for that information.  This site is wonderful.  May I ask how do many of you have access to such wonderful records - hopefully you are not using valuable credits searching for strangers!!!!

Hi

Scottish census records are on Ancestry (except for the actual images) but some of the transcribing is pretty horrendous and on Scotlandspeople you can use the search facility to help identify an event.  It only costs when you click on view so by searching on various fields you can often work out events. For example if you looked for a death of Thomas Young in Perthshire in 1904 it comes up with no matches but if you did the same for 1894 it comes up with 1 match and by inserting age and then parish you can narrow it right down. It can be time consuming but is free. Obviously you then need to download the image to confirm its the right Thomas Young. Naturally it doesn't work too well with popular names or large cities.

Have a wee look at this link too.
There's a lot of reading but it's worth it - could save you 20p at least!
