Falmouth Tug 'Lizard'
« on: Tuesday 18 March 08 00:27 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on the Falmouth Tug 'Lizard' and/or the attempted rescue of a Jim Barker off Coverack.

An excerpt from the book Coverack by Cyril Hart mentions an occasion where a Jim Barker is hauling in a store pot near Coverack but drowns despite efforts by the 'lizard' who was coming into Coverack at that time.

It is possible that Jim Barker may be one of my ancestors and this incident may have occurred around 1871 -1881?

Any elaborations welcome

Thanks

There is a freebmd death Jun1875 Falmouth district

Maybe the maritime museum may have something http://www.nmmc.co.uk/

Hi Althea

1871 -32 up to 1881 - age 42.

There is another James Barker of that time which I think is the one you have located.

I will try the Maritime Museum as well - Thanks.

Note: you also have Barkers in your tree any from Cornwall?

Just to keep everything updated - I emailed and have had a response from The Maritime Museum in Falmouth - unfortunately they had no records other than:-

She seems to have been built in 1878, possibly locally. She is shown in the background of a picture in Passenger Steamers of the River Fal by Kittridge.

So if anybody can add to that I would be grateful.  It does however give a smaller time zone for searching for Jim Barker i.e. tug built circa 1878!

Btw Thanks to the Maritime Museum - and Ron Hawkins - very prompt response.
