birth registrations/certificates
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 19:45 GMT (UK) »
Please can any  one explain why/how my mothers birth registration shows her mothers maiden name as her surname and the copy of her birth certificate that she sent for prior to her marriage in 1939 gives her mothers husbands name as the father. My mother born in 1917 was illegitimate. Both entries show that the regisration district is Tadcaster. Her mother was already married when my mother was born and had three legitimate children.

Hi Cyndy,

I'm guessing that your mother's birth was re-registered later. Does the index of the original GRO index show something handwritten next to her name?  :)

Oops - I've re-read your post and don't think I've answered it correctly, sorry!  :-X So your mother was born illegitimately to a married woman, correct? Was she registered in both her mother's maiden and married name?

Hi, thanks for your response.

Yes my mother was the illegitimate daughter of a married woman who already had three legitimate children. Her husband was serving in the army in palestine in  November 1917 when mum as born. Her mother went to live with a married sister until after mums birth and stayed on in Sherburn until my mother went into Barnados.

My mother, Marjorie`s birth certificate ,which is a copy ordered just before her marriage gives her fathers name as Charles Ward[her mothers, husband and married name].

While researching mums birth I found page details of births registered oct/nov/dec which gives Marjorie BLANCHARD[her mothers maiden name.]
Both births are registered in Tadcaster.

Can this be the same person?

Well ... I can't see the Dec 1917 birth registration for Marjorie Blanchard in the complete index  ???

I'm not familiar enough with English birth registrations to answer this  but I believe that the husband of a married woman is de facto considered the father of any child born into the marriage. But let's wait for someone who actually knows  :)

The Dec 1917 birth registration shows

Marjorie Ward (mother's maiden name Blanchard)   Tadcaster  9c    1652

so it looks as though she was registered as a child of Mr Ward.

Birth registrations from SepQ 1911 show the mother's surname; married or unmarried.

Thanks to both of you. I have now looked more carefully!!!and you are spot on Nanny Jane. And Tati I think your explanation of the use of the mothers married surname in these circumstances is correct.
But can you explain why the copy of my mothers  birth certificate gives a different volume and page number i.e entry number 111 in the register book of births no.5?

Hi cyndy,

It could be that your mother's birth certificate came from the local registration office;  the details I gave were from the General Register Office's index.
