helen mockerler?,mechlan?, michlan? and john paterson
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 00:43 GMT (UK) »
hi all,
looking for ideas on finding john paterson and his wife helen.
her name is spelt differently on 3 certs i have, mockerler, on a daughters marriage cert, mechlan, on her daughters OPR and michlan on another daughters ( i think ) OPR.
both were born abt 1800 and both died before the 1841 census, or were not around at the time, they were living in the hamilton area, scotland at the time. no death records have been found. i also cannot find any marriage or birth record. i know they were there in the early 1820's ( OPR ).
i have an idea they came from ireland originally, but can anyone tell me where i could start looking?
trying to knock down my biggest brickwall so any help gratefully received
steve

Unfortunately you need more information to start tracing them in Ireland (if they were from Ireland). Even if you did find where they lived in Ireland (need at least the parish if not actual townland) and know their religion it's possible the church records from such an early date might not exist.

unfortunately, that is all i know about them, i  do know they were both in the clothing trade, he was a weaver and she was a tambourer(lace), both skills i presume learned while they were there, i don't know if this is restricted to a particular area of ireland, which may help if it is,
of course, this just may remain my great wall.

No, their occupations don't help point to any particular area of Ireland. Thought from your first post that you weren't sure they were actually from Ireland.

 :(  :(
oh well,
i'm not sure they are from ireland, but no trace in scotland, and i have been led to believe that one of helen's names..... mockerler, on her daughters marriage cert, could be of irish origin.
 i know..... grasping at straws..

Haven't seen 'Mockerler' anywhere before and putting only the surname in LDS search page brings up zero results. With the variations in spelling it won't be easy to find what the 'real' name is supposed to be.

hi stephen 7, your surname interest is discussed on the link below
with the spelling I am familiar with, you may have seen this already
but I thought it was worth a try.I live in dublin and only ever knew
of one family with this version of the name.
                                        good luck with your search.
