My husband was a member of the Royal Naval Reserve.

From what I understand it's a bit like the TA. - part -time sailors.
He'll probably kill me for saying that as he took it very seriously.
He was an electrical artificer and worked in the engine room.

It involved a weekly meeting and then training weekends away at sea and then 2 weeks away in the summer.

If we had gone into a world war, then the Reserve are the first called up.

Hope this helps.

regards, Olly

Well i am  no expert Gazza but should be by now ;D .A Naval Reserve Man (never heard them called that before :)
is in fact a R.N.R . Both my Grandfathers were these. Men from the merchant Navy with good qualifications. Were often borrowed by the Royal navy more so if they had leadership potential,or were engineers and the like. They were never in the Royal Navy they just got paid by them and after the wars they were decomissioned and went back to the merchant. Although i don't think many did, My Own Grandfather became A commander  with a distinguised record during his 30 years service with the R.N.R. These men were very important to the Royal Navy Although i don't think they ever admitted it. I could be wrong though.

There are a few military experts on this site, who'll put you right, but basically the answers already given are correct. You can join the reserves directly (like the Navy TA), or once you have finished your full service in the navy, i.e. retire, you are then put on the reserve list, which would mean in time of conflict, you would be next on the list to be called up before conscription started.

I had this discussion not so long ago with my cousin, who "retired" from the Marines after 24 years, and is now a reservist.

Yes, sorry, I should have made that clear. I was talking about the 1970's.

Although my husband was never actually in the Royal Navy, he did serve 2 years as a merchant seaman and joined the reserve when he left the sea.

Thanks for the answers all. I was still wondering if the cases mentioned would still be true for 1870?

How quaint  ;D

The British forces does actually have 3 branches - Army, Navy and Air Force. The Royal Marines are part of the Royal Navy.

I think most of the military experts here are more army orientated, but general queries, such as reserves etc will apply to all three.
