Deptford Bottle Works
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 15:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone!

Several (well - many!) of my maternal family worked in the Deptford bottle works and  I'm hoping that there maybe more info on the Deptford Bottle Works online or in the archives?

thanks

Jenny

Hi Jenny,

There are a few pictures of the old Deptford bottle works, but not much about it that I could find online, there was a bit more about the Seaham Harbour Bottle Works.

If you enter Sunderland Bottle Works in your search, you can see what I mean (entering Deptford gets you a different place entirely!)

Thanks Barbara,

I have only just narrowed it down to the Deptford one and did a search for Deptford but as you say, it comes up with Deptford London!

Look for 'Ayre's Quay Bottle Works'.  This was established about 1723, one of the proprietors, Mr. Wm. Barrass died on 23rd October 1790 and was buried at Gateshead.  The bottle works were operated by various owners and finally from c1869 to 1923 by Laing, Horn, Scott and Co.  In 1942 Sir James Laing built a new shipbuilding berth on the site.

There was also at Ayre's Quay, on the Ballast Hills, from 1802 the glassworks of R. Pemberton which seems to have operated until 1881, having other owners from 1853.

There is more information in "The Glass Industry of Tyne and Wear, Part 1: Glassmaking on Wearside" published by Tyne and Wear County Council Museums in 1979.

If you do a Google search for 'Ayre's Quay Bottle Works' one reference comes up on Rootsweb which has a link to a map showing the bottle works.
