Major In Army Francis Frederill
« on: Monday 24 March 08 20:57 GMT (UK) »
This is a long shot.

Maria Orrom gave birth to a son in 1839/1840 - Francis Frederill Orrom, when he married in 1859 to Caroline Prall at Tonbridge Parish Church he states that his father was a Francis FREDRELL Major in the Army?

Is there any way he could be tracked down, I doubt it somehow, but thought someone may be able to advise me?

Francis was bought up by William Nightingale, shoemaker, who Maria married in 1840

The surname doesn't seem to exist in the civil registration index.

There is a baptism for a Francis Orram in Tonbridge parish registers (I am looking at a transcript of the Bishop's Transcripts not a transcript of the register itself, so the mother's name may be a mistake).

ORRAM, Francis Iredale
Christening Date:28 May 1839 Tonbridge, Kent
Mother:   Sarah ORRAM

Thank you for that information.

It was suggested too me that the surname perhaps should read Frederick, but perhaps we were not meant to make a connection!

Tonbridge poor law records may supply further information if maintenance was sought for the baby.

Hello Annette

I have the Poor law Records for mid Kent (includes Tonbridge).
Nothing for Orram or Oram I am afraid.

Part of this story can be proved or disproved very easily indeed by checking the Army Lists.

Could you advise me of how and where I look at the Army lists?  Anything available on line?

If I need the Army Lists, I use the National Archives or the Society of Genealogists, if they have the period I want, so I'm not up to date about what's online. However I believe The Genealogist has the 1842 and the 1863 available. Others can be bought on CD from various suppliers.
