Redwood (Blenheim) - Look up please
« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 11:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm new to this forum (& researching family history for that matter!), not sure if anyone can help, but I believe a branch of my husband's family is from NZ.

His Great Grandmother was Bernadette Mary Raphael Josephine Redwood (her birth records would help to confirm a link to the Redwood family in NZ), I believe she was born in Blenheim NZ (a guess as this is where the family was from) she may have been born anywhere between about 1880 and 1890 (she was married in 1909 in Australia).  If my other educated guesses are correct, her parents were Charles Redwood (b. 1837 approx, d 1915) & Mary Elizabeth Grimstone (b. 1843 approx, d. 1912).  Charles Redwood was the son of Henry Redwood Sr, an early pioneer and the brother of Archbishop Francis Redwood.

What I'm after is:
:) Bernadette Mary Raphael Josephine Redwood's Birth details
:) Charles Redwood & Mary Elizabeth Grimstone's Marriage details
:) Any other children Charles & Mary may have had, I believe it could be as many as 15

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful...

Cheers.....JJ Girl

P.S. Hope it's OK to ask for this type of thing...

Hi JJ Girl

Regarding Charles Redwood and Mary Grimstone's marriage details.

All I can give you is that they were married in 1865  Folio Number #0847 here in New Zealand.

To have full date, witnesses and where the marriage took place, you will have to order a printout, but being so early, I do not know how much information you will receive, and its in the higher price range.

Thanks heaps Christine.

Hi JJ Girl

Do a google search with   "Charles Redwood" zealand

Quite a few hits and some could be children, looks like your Charles Redwood arrived here in 1842 - could be on the ship "Bolton" with my some of my family,  will go and check.

Thanks heaps Christine

I phoned the Marlborough Museum and they have some information about the Redwood family.  I will go and see what they have but probably not until next Tuesday as the research room is only open two days each week.

The "George Fyffe" went to Wellington and Nelson

Hi Bronwen, Christine & Althea,

Thank you all so much for providing me with such fabulous information.  I've had a look at all the links you suggested and they were very helpful.

I'm pretty sure the Redwood family arrived in 1842 aboard the George Fyfe (thank you for the passenger list).

I have previously discovered the Papers Past site - isn't it fantastic! And have spent many hours seaching to find Bernadette Redwood's birth, but to no avail - she's really my biggest mystery!

Do you think it's important to obtain marriage certificates, or if it's referenced in an old newspaper does that make it a valid enough option - what do you think...told you I'm new at this!

Thank you all again......and thank you very much Bronwen for offering to visit the library - that is very kind indeed!

Cheers........Samantha (JJ) :D

Hi JJ Gill

Some people have just the right family members that history loves.  I have also seen this house on a New Zealand stamp.

Do you have Bernadettes marriage or death cert,
asking because if we can get a more exact timeframe for her birth, then it would make it easier to get her birth cert..plus to look for birth notice if not.
