Albert Wilkes-Migrated Abt. 1870
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 00:01 GMT (UK) »
I have been unable to find migration details for Albert Wilkes and family.

I would like shipping dates and ports if available.

Family Detail;
Albert Wilkes Currier b.1834 Gloucester
Mary Ann  Wife b. 1836 Cheltenham
Samuel b. 1860 Gloucester
Annie b. 1862 Gloucester
Eliza b. 1866 Gloucester
Alice b. 1869 Gloucester

Albert appears on the Federal census of 1871 (Ontario Index)
This detail then puts any migration to the period around 1870.

I have had a post on Albert previously which established links back to Gloucester UK and confirmed his common family ties with my ancestor, his brother, Charles who migrated to Australia in 1854 with family.

You can search the 1901/1911 at Automated Genealoy.

1901 - 1911 Census
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/

You can also search for his death at Family Search Labs.

LDS - Family Search Labs
(I believe he died in 1927 at the age of 93 years in Simcoe County) As I don't know his parents names, I can't be sure.

Janice

Thanks for the reply, I had a 1871 census record which would be close to his arrival. The Family Search Labs is new to me so I will have to follow up. Passenger lists as available on line leave me perplexed, if I had the necessary search information I probably wouldn't have to do the search in the first place.

I have been spoiled by our NSW Aust archive searches which let you start with a surname only then refine the search as required.

The 1901 and 1911 Census should show what year he immigrated. You can then search the different ships for that year. It sounds alot worse than it is.  ;D

I've managed to find several family members that way.

Here are some links that might help you find out more information about him.

Here they are in 1901 Simcoe as Wilks...
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=17790&highlight=10

the year of immigration is down as 1869.... ;D
Alfred & Julia are still with them, and are working... J.J.

Given that the last child born in England was in 1869, if they did immigrate that year, it narrows down the time frame to help make it easier to find...(on 1911... It does look as though the enumerator put down 186...but didn't finish)
They aren't in the Toronto immigrant  lists, unfortunately...although the time frame made them good candidates to show on there....

Toronto imm office ...tried one more time, and perhaps this is she! ( Sarnia is where some children were born, so Albert likely came over first)..Yes, just looked and that's where he was in 1871...

Wilks, Mrs / Date of Application: Oct 22 1869
Female Adults -1 Nationality English / Children - 3 / one female this doesn't match but then it doesn't say amount of males, either...
Ship: Nestorian Landed: Quebec
Destination: Sarnia  Total Number in Party: 4
Series RG 11-3, volume1

Now you just need to go here, choose the ship and year....then look for arrival oct  to Quebec ( I find less is more with databases, as too much info can get 0 results)...hopefully it is there I only see one landed in Oct. 10th ...not all are done yet...
