Can anybody read this occupation?
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 01:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anybody help?

On the following 1861 entry - William Dyer b1826 in Weeting, Norfolk.  He is living at what looks like Picadilly ?, Mayfair, St Georges, Hanover Square, Middlesex.  It says he is a servant, but when I look on the original image it looks like House Porter.  Does anybody agree?  Were the servants listed in order of importance in those big households, or was it going by Above house, Below house etc?

Hi Subaru

Looking at the census sheet it says
William Dyer serv mar 35  house porter Norfolk Weeting.

Lots of census's have the persons name then serv then in the occupation list , could be anything like cook , nurse, porter etc.

Thank you everybody for your replies.  Sounds like it was quite a posh house to work in.  I always wondered why my gr grandmother was born in that area when most of the family were from Norfolk.  It looks like her parents (my gr gr grandparents)had moved down there to be near Thomas, who was the brother of my gr gr grandmother.

I'm sure there was an easier way of putting that, I've gone cross-eyed looking it at it myself :-\

I'll google the old Baronet, thanks Andy.
