Gregson
« on: Friday 28 March 08 00:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I have been trying to look into my past on and off for a while now, but come to a bit of a dead end on my Dad's side. I'm hoping that someone here will have the expertise that I don't and should that be the case I will be very grateful. My Dad was born in London, but grew up in Bangor. He left for England in 1946, aged 17, and never went back until I took him there for a weekend for a birthday present for his 70th. Dad never really spoke much about his past although I was always aware of how fond he was of his Bangor days. When I took him there for a weekend for his 70th we had a great time visiting his haunts from the past. Thats when I really started getting interested in the history. My grandparents all died before I was born, so I never knew much. Dad however sadly died not long after our visit so I never got the info that I wished I had. I knew that his father went by the same name, Edward Thomas Gregson, and that he served in the Irish Guards 2nd battalion. He died in 1956 and his death certificate states it was as a result of being gassed in WW1 (Ypres). My Grandmothers maiden name was Annie Graham. Her dates are 1884 - 1958. I have since discovered that my Grandfather was married before that to a Robena Nicholson. I have got a copy of the marriage certificate and it is from that that I know my Great Grandfathers name to have been Henry Gregson, born 1872. It seems that my Grandfather and Annie Graham never actually married. I can get no further back that Henry Gregson and cant find any record of Annie Gregson. The only other thing I know is that my Dad was always of the impression that the family name originated from Lurgan. I can find mention of many Gregsons in Lurgan, but cant make the link. Ive tried all the records I can find, but I am aware that there are a few on here that may know other places to look. It would be great if anyone could come up with something or give me some advice.

Kind Regards,
Chris Gregson

Hi,

The Gregson name was quite common in the county areas between Lurgan and portadown, ie Drumgor and neighbouring townlands.  I  went to school with a family called Gregson who originated from this area.I'll be in touch if I have any info. for you.   Here is a birth record for you although the date may be too early.

Record Type Civil Birth
Date of Birth 24 Dec 1867
Name Edward GREGSON
Gender M
Fathers Name James GREGSON
Mothers Maiden Name Annie JONES
Civil District  Lurgan
Sub District Portadown
County Armagh

The surname Jones was quite popular in and around these townlands too.

Hi again, On re-reading your post I realize that my reply is not very helpful other than to confirm that there were Gregsons living in the Lurgan area!! Apologies , I muddled up the info you supplied in my head( put it down to a blonde moment!! ) I'll be in touch anyhow if I find anything.

Hi,

Thanks very much anyway, Im very grateful for your efforts. I suspect that there is a link but I am missing the in between generation. For some reason, my ancestors seem to have been hiding their past! If I can ever make the link between Bangor (Or Belfast) and Lurgan than I could probably go back a few generations.

Kind Regards and thanks once again,
Chris Gregson

Hi Chris,

Do you have access to emerald ancestors and also the armagh ancestry site. They are worthwhile - if you use the two in conjuntion with each other you can eliminate red herrings  and prevent paying a fortune for records.  Also try posting your query in the Co Armagh section as Lurgan borders the county divide. Lurgan's postal address is Co. Armagh and the townlands that a lot came from are in Seagoe parish and some in Shankill(Lurgan). However i do believe that Maralin ( just oustside Lurgan on the way to Belfast) had it's fair share of Gregsons too!!

Hi,

Yes I did have that one. I do use emerald ancestors but seem to have exhausted what it can offer. I didnt know about the Armagh site so will have a look at that. Your info is very useful and I really appreciate your help.

Many thanks,
Chris

Also try proni website for covenant and freeholders and failteromhat for griffiths to see were the gregsons were living at that time C1864.You will find that they were mostly in the Lurgan/Seagoe areas.
Ulster ancestry provide a good service for a fee. They are very helpful.
Ulster Historical foundation have records predominantly in  Counties Antrim and Down.
Plus there is also the Belfast Forum.

One of my Great Grandmothers was a Mary Jane Gregson of Annaghanoon townland who married John Cheyne (Chaine) also from Annaghanoon townland, in Waringstown Church of Ireland on 21st Dec 1887. Both ages at marriage were given as 22.
Her Father was Edward Gregson, a farmer.
I post this info in case it links to your ancestors somewhere in the future.

OTTO

BB,
Can you find any more info on this couple.
