It really does help in this game to have a reasonable knowledge of towns/counties. And it's fun to learn. Keep in mind that there have been numerous county boundary changes over the years, so if you find a town in one county that censuses tell you is in another, it may be that there has been a boundary change.

One of the best sites is Genuki as recommended by Andy:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/

There are maps and all sorts of interesting links on there. The site is a bit compicated to use at first but it is worth persevering as it's so useful.

Thank you for the link,

I had used this site for Saleby info (I think) and meant to go back and look at it in more detail, now I know it is a "keeper" I will go back and have a good look.

Cheers!

I must admit the West Derby and Lincolnshire references threw me in the first post. They are on opposite sides of England.

Bell is quite a common name in the Louth/Horncastle/Market Rasen areas of Lincolnshire (i don't have any in my tree but have come across dozens while searching the census for people) and there are still Bell families in the area today.

Lincolnshire is basically split in two, North Lincolnshire (covering Grimsby, Barton upon Humber, Scunthorpe and the Isle of Axholme) has a local bmd index. The rest of the county doesn't have a local bmd index at present.

Hey cheers for that information, Sorry about the delay in response, I have just returned from a holiday in Australia.  However upon return I have 5 BMD transcribed certificates in my email, and the great thing is everyone was for the person I was after, just waiting for the originals now.

Thanks everyone for all your help along the way.  The info in the BMD's answer one of my questions under my challenging ancestor post but then also opens up for new questions too.

I will be posting info in there soon if anyone is interested in following along.

I'm puzzled, when you order from the GRO they usually just arrive direct, who transcribed the certificates?

Hi Andy,

I was referred to a guy in NZ, Tony Fitzgerald, who you can order the certificates through and pay an extra (I think) $2.00 for professional transcribing... Very good prices too, $29 NZ per Certificate... if you are interested in his website it is:

He is a really lovely guy, I am still awaiting the photocopies but getting the transcribed version earlier via email is nice.

Hi

You can order them direct yourself for 7GDP including postage (about $16 AUD at present) and it takes about 2 weeks.  Its probably the way Tony orders them. The link below is for England & Wales

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

If you require Scottish BMD's you can download them yourself and they are much cheaper than England.

Oh cheers for that,

Looks like UK is only a bit cheaper when I convert from NZ to UK at 7 pounds per certificate, I have some Scottish ancestors I haven't yet plunged into and the Scotspeople site will be of assitance there, thank you for sharing those links.

Awesome!
