John Brown & Prudentia Anderson
« on: Friday 28 March 08 12:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I am looking up my great grandfather who reportedly emigrated to Canada in the 1860's, or so the family stories go

(family stories were wrong, he was married in 1837 in Canada at age 20, he likely emigrated in 1836 or thereabouts)

He was John Brown, DOB unknown, (born 1817) died 1884, married to Prudentia Anderson (born 1814 or1811) died 1895,  who emigrated from Belfast. married 1837 in Lower Canada

Their son Joseph Anderson Brown, and his DOB is 28 Feb. 1847.

They likely disembarked in Quebec in the middle 1830's, but, there is nothing on the ship passenger lists I have found to date.

There is a connection believed to exist to a brother or cousin who emigrated to Brazil and was an engineer in the building of a railway in South America.

My father Jack (aka Johnnie) Brown, now deceased, visited Belfast during WWII and says he visited his cousins who were in the linen business. That is about all we know regarding the family in Belfast. My father was not good for details.

If there is anyone on the forum to assist it would be first class, and thanks,

Arn Brown

Amended to save some reading. funny how family verbal histories can be wrong ;)

If you go to www.familysearch.org you can see them in the 1881 census. They are living in Walsingham, Norfolk Co, Ontario:

John Brown Sr, 64, b. Ireland, cabinet maker, Presbyterian
Prudentia, wife, 67, b. Ireland, Presbyterian

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/ has Ontario deaths.

Prudentia's is there, but no parents' info.  There are a few Johns in 1884.

If you search for people whose mother was listed as Prudentia Anderson on their death certificate, you get:
Elizabeth Brown, b. 10 Aug 1844, widow of William Kaw, died 22 Dec 1909, Mt Pleasant, Brant, Ontario (birthplace not given), parents John Brown and Prudentia Anderson
also
John Brown, b. 1842, Quebec, d. 2 Apr 1915, married, parents John Brown and Prudentis Anderson

http://cf.groups.yahoo.com/group/GFQ-HSF/message/19
 - this seems to have their marriage. I believe it's a list of marriage licenses for lower Canada (Quebec region).

http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/
 - also you can find that they are buried in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Brant county.

J.J. are you on the wrong thread? Your info is not relative to the search. Wrong John Brown.

thanks for the try though.

Arn- suspect that J.J. has posted correct entry and that John Brown age 38 born Quebec is child of John Brown and Prudentia Anderson as they have a daughter Pradentia (Prudentia?).

jorose, you've been a big help.

I now have confirmed

John born in Ireland, 1817, cabinet maker
Prudentia born in Ireland 1814

Married 5 January 1837

I was at the Pleasant Hill Cemetary some time ago and took rubbings. The land for the cemetary was donated to the township by Joseph Brown, son of John and Prudentia.

Joseph was born in 1847 and his son John was born in 1912. Joseph continued to sire children up until age 69. I am John's son.

There may have been siblings for Joseph but they are unknown to me. One could  have been John, but I have not seen a record to date. John, (my father) had a number of siblings.

Based on the recent finds it looks as though John Brown and Prudentia Anderson arrived in Canada much sooner than originally thought.

John Brown (58), wife Marguerite? (49), widowed daughter Prudentia (29), son John L. (19) and son Chaney/Chancy? (16) appear in 1901 census (www.automatedgenealogy.com)

Prudentia Brown m.22 Mar.1893 Ontario to Alexander McIntyre.
