Scotland census (1881) - Bedford, John & Margaret (Fraser)
« on: Friday 14 January 05 04:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping someone with the Scotland census for 1881 (or any other years) could have a look for the following family.

John Bedford
Margaret Fraser (they never actually married as far as I can tell but she may go by Bedford anyway)
Children (all born Dumfries)
BEDFORD Anna b.1858
BEDFORD Fraser b.1860
BEDFORD John William b.1865
BEDFORD Robison (poss. Robinson?) b.1867
BEDFORD Donald Lee b.1869
BEDFORD Godfrey Newton b.1872
BEDFORD Archibald b.1874

I'm really keen to find out year and place of birth for the parents as I'm not even sure that John Bedford (snr) was born in Scotland and there are so many Margaret Frasers!

Thanks,
Ruth

Hi Ruth, I'm sure I read somewhere on this site, that the 1881 census for parts of Dumfries are missing.  I had a look at the 1881 census, but there was nothing for Bedford in Dumfries.

A sequel....

John Bedford Died February 22nd 1896 and on the death cert says his fathers name was John Bedford a Hand Loom Tweed Weaver and his Mother was Annie Bedford nee Yellowell ( I think) and one of the listed causes of death was British cholera ...

1896 BEDFORD JOHN  M 66 TROQUEER KIRKCUDBRIGHT 882/00 0019

the reference number it may be worth your while getting this cert :D

Once I found him I then found Margarets death...

Margaret Bedford nee Fraser died December 26th 1908  Father John Fraser Army Sergeant deceased Mother Grace Fraser nee Caven and cause of death is listed as Cancer of glands in the neck...

 1908 FRASER MARGARET  F 70 TROQUEER KIRKCUDBRIGHT 882/00 0107

Donald Lee Bedford
died March 1st 1897 aged 26 years...

1897 BEDFORD DONALD LEE  M 26 TROQUEER KIRKCUDBRIGHT 882/00 0025

Robinson Bedford died June 1st 1925  aged 57 years in Falkirk Stirlingshire, occupation listed on Death Cert as Ironfitter,  cause of death Heart disease and pneumonia. Isabella his wife registered his death

1925 BEDFORD ROBINSON  M 57 FALKIRK STIRLING 479/00 0235

I also found in the deaths ( I hope this isn't too morbid ) a Godfrey Bedford not the son of John and Margaret but Johns brother.. it confirmed the Yellowell surname...

Died May 4th 1864 and both parents still living at that time.. (he was a woolen Weaver too must have really been the family business.. ) but I cannot find their deaths

1864 BEDFORD GODFREY  M - DUMFRIES DUMFRIES 821/00 0150

Best Wishes

The higher numbered ED for Dumfries are missing see thread below...

For 1851 try the D&G council site.  Sadly this website breaks frequently but normally works during 9-5 GMT.

Wow!  Thanks Mo and everyone.

I'd hit a brick wall with my Scotland folk but now have some really good leads to follow up on.

Thanks so much.
