http://www.cyndislist.com/

and google local area genealogy sites often have message boards and forums.


If you want to "investigate"  living people,  no free sites that I know of  and fees will vary depending of the background check you are wanting......addresses, criminal, etc.  Never done this route, tho' sometimes curiosity has lead me to think about it.   For myself,  find it a bit objectionably invasive for recreational genealogy purposes.   I know people have used this option when there are medical or inheritance issues involved.

I'm not sure I would trust an on-line source to do this kind of investigation  --  could be a rip-off or backfire on you.

When I am trying to look for possible living descendants, I use Yahoo people search. And I try googling their names. I've had some success with it. It helps if they either have unusual names or I know the general area they live, or both.

switchboard.com is helpful for phone numbers and addresses.  birthdatabase.com can be helpful if you know the person's approximate age.
