Help with Donald Robertson Sturdy 1866 please

Can anyone help with Donald Robertson Sturdy born 1866 Thornton Le Dale.I cannot work out who his father is.
1871 he is 4 descibed as a nurse child. What does this mean?Not with parents.
1881 with grandparents William Sturdy 1813-1887 listed as 14 drapers ass
1891 in Lancashire Her Majesty's Customs
1901 examing officer HM Customs.

This indicates to me that the child was illegitimate

Roberstson may just be the father's name - this happened to an illegitimate child in my ancestry where the mother put his surname as a middle name.

Thankyou.If Donalds mother is Margeret.Could it be Margeret Sturdy born 1840 daughter of William 1813-1887.
in 1871 she is with father William lisyed as single 30
in 1881 single 40,also Donald is with them.
Could she have had 2 illigit children,as there is also Annie Jane 12?
Why would you pay someone to look after your child? Because it was sick?

I was just going to say that he must be with mum on the 1881 census. I also wondered if Annie was her daughter.

Could be several reasons why he was put with another family - perhaps her family wouldn't help at the time.

Might be interesting to see where Margaret is in 1871

Margaret is at home with dad William in 1871 - widower. Reckon he wouldn't or couldn't look after the child. Margaret isn't recorded as working.

She seems a bit old to be having illegitimate children
