Mic match with photo? Robert Garfield COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 23:53 BST (UK) »
Photo is of great-uncle Robert Garfield.
I'm fairly sure I've found his MIC, but Service Record is not on Ancestry. Family 'legend' says he was gassed in WW1 and had a bad chest ever after, though he did survive the War. The MIC records his  details as Pte 76795, Corps as RAMC Durham Light Infantry, and he was the Victory and British Medals. No dates are recorded. Above and below his number is the number 184448.
Does the photo match with the MIC please?  (I want to make sure I have a genuine record match).

Oh dear...Sorry to disappoint... :'(

This chap is from the Royal Engineers...Fairly early war...deffo pre 1916

Walking Out cane, and married at the time of the photo.

Now as for your int...

I haven't the list of numbers, but unless he was re mustered into the RAMC, he couldn't be in the DLI and the RE as well all at the same time!

I think this may be someone else... :-\

One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

You do have x2 numbers I think, so you may have someone who was DLI, then gassed and then re mustered into the RAMC as he was unfit for front line duties...

But...

That doesn't match with the pic...

Perhaps you could post the MIC??

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=2446287&queryType=1&resultcount=5

Found his MIC here unfortunately its not yet on ancestry.Have you downloaded it?

Looking on SDGW for near numbers of 184448 and the dates of casualties were all between 1917/18 (so are DLI Casualties with 767**) so he may have joined up before 1916 but not deployed overseas til after as he has no 1915 star.

The outlineMIC doesnt give RAMC is it actually annotated on the card?? maybe he was a stretcher bearer?

Stretcher bearers, unless part of a Field Ambulance and in that vicinity(then they were ranked as medical assistants), were badged to the parent Regt, and not RAMC. This was normally carried out by the bn admin platoon and also the Regt Band if they were forward deployed. The bn MO had a cadre of SBs but they had an armband stating thus.

Therefore I don't think this chap was RAMC

I gave the wrong details when I said RAMC - got mixed up with brother Tom, all that excitement with finding this MIC
