Hi Crystal,

That's a good site with some helpful tips.

Interesting but there are some mistakes and misleading statements on the page.

aghadowey, no one's perfect. So long as people remember that every piece of information they find should be checked then Roberta's site is as good as most of the sites on the internet.  See if you can contact Roberta Gaynor and tell her about those mistakes.

It might help if you could point out those misleading statements as many RootsChatters who are researching their Irish ancestry are just starting to dip their toes into this area and would appreciate advice from people who know slightly more than they know.

Christopher

Here's a few examples of mis-information:

III. If, after exhausting all American records, you have not determined the
place of origin in Ireland, there are several general indexes for Iteland
which could be consulted.
     a. Civil Registration. 1845-present. Genealogical Society."

Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages only began in 1845. Registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began 1864. Although much later on the age the proper dates are given.

"and Offoly (Ua Failghe) formerly King's County" should be Offaly.

"C. 1831 Census gives names of inhabitants, relation to head, ages,
occupations, and information about the house and property.  Some returns
are available for the following parishes in Londonderry County: Agevey,
Aghanloo, Arboe, Artrea, Benagher, Glendermot, Killowen, Macosquin,
Tamlaght-Finlagen, Templemore, and Termoneeny." Agevey should be Agivey, Benagher is Banagher and Aghadowey parish is not mentioned at all.

"G. 1911 census gives same information as the 1901 plus the number of years
married, total number of children born alive, and number of children still
living." this information is supposed to be given for married women only- widows and widowers were not asked these questions.

"C. Presbyterian.  Records generally start about 1800 and all are extant.  A
fairly complete listing will be found in Falley's book." some Presbyterian church records have been lost and many do not start until 1850s or later.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Genforum has an article on Irish Research which mentions Margaret Dickson Falley's two volume set "Irish and Scotch-Irish Ancestral Research" (Evanston, Illinois: , 1961-1962).

This book should be available in Local Studies sections in libraries in Ireland. The Central Library in Belfast has copies on order.

Two more books worth consulting are ....

1. Brian Mitchell's "The Pocket Guide to Irish Genealogy" which contains information about Irish history and use of major Irish research sources including civil records, parish registers, gravestone inscriptions, wills, the 1901 and 1911 censuses, and the Griffiths Valuation and Tithe Applotment Books.

2. William Roulston's "Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors. The Essential Genealogical Guide to Early Modern Ulster, 1600-1800" http://tinyurl.com/4phozd
