HENGASTELL Church Nr.Bridgend
« on: Friday 04 April 08 11:04 BST (UK) »
Would some kind person, give me a push in the right direction. :o

I'm looking for the Church records for Hengastell, Nr. Bridgend. I was told that the church was demolished in about 1870 and a new building erected in about 1880 now called St.Mary's Nolton.

Genuki, gives me HENGASTELL / OLDCASTLE, Monmouthshire, surely this is not the same place?

I thought that St.Mary's Nolton was a Chapel of ease to Coity.

I'm looking for records from about the 1790's for Hengastell, but it's all getting a little muddled ???

I don't know if it will be of any help but it would appear to be referred to as Yr Hengastell (The Old Castle)

Having googled it the following might be helpful.

www.cassinimaps.co.uk/shop/uploads/sheetnumber/170.htm

They do historical maps that might set you on the right trail.

The district is often known as Ogwr which was the old county council before Bridgend.

Best of Luck

Thank you wakokid

I have bought maps from Cassinimaps before, they are very good. But it does not help in finding the Parish records, perhaps I should try the GFHS, they are usually very good, but I do not see them among their PR's transcripts.

I suspect you already have this link, but all the same:

http://www.walesdirectory.co.uk/tourist-attractions/Churches_and_Chapels/Wales7417.htm

I can't access the extra info (in work and it blocks religion)

This one is actually more or less i nthe rown centre in Bridgend, and is just around the corner from where I used to work (if I'm thinking of the same one).

Also, see this link as the local library has a book for sale on this church (assuming it is the same one):

http://www.bridgend.gov.uk/Web1/groups/public/documents/services/001892.hcsp

I think the church is situated just off one of the main roads leading through Bridgend looking at the image on the book.

St Mary Nolton is main parish church in Bridgend, on Merthyr Mawr Road.  Bridgend library has a large archive section, many records etc, this section is situated at Cefn Parc, Park Street Bridgend.   Main library is closed at present (repairs etc), but archive section still open. Hope this helps.

Thank you Halfasheep & smeni for the information about St. Mary's. I think I will need to contact the RO in Bridgend and see if they hold the records for HENGASTELL. I'll put the information if I get any on this board for future reference.

Thank you for the replies
