This Birth has me Stumped
« on: Friday 14 January 05 21:24 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate the birth certificate for Robert Cardwell.

in 1887 at the time of his marriage, he was 21, and listed as living in Cow Gap Lane.  I have located census and death records which are consistent for this Robert.

I can find Christening/Birth records for the siblings after him, but not his, or the two siblings before him.

What I do know by doing reverse math is that he should appear in the birth records mid 1865 - mid 1866.  There is a Robert born late 1864 - but after ordering that birth certificate, it is the wrong father.

I do know that Roberts father is Richard and mother is Janet - or some variation of the spelling.

On 1837online, I can find a Cardwell "male" about the right time, but I had previously discounted this unknown child as being a death since he isn't named.

Any ideas where else to turn, I have tried 1837 online, and Lancashire and freebmd with no additional luck.

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Susanne

Hi Susanne,

What a puzzle !

Where in Lancashire is Cow Gap Lane ? What trades were the parents were they farmers maybe they had trouble in registering Robert.

Sometimes if children got "missed" they may baptise older children along with their younger siblings. If you have no luck this would be your best option next I  think :)

Hi Susanne,

The Cardwell birth that you have found with just "male" may be the one you need.  Just because his name was not registered at the time does not mean that he died.  My gt gt grandfather's birth certificate from 1837 does not give his name but I can assure you that he lived beyond 1901. ;)

Could there be problems with transcription - Caldwell etc?

I will try the transcription error route and see what I find.  Then I suppose I can order the "male" certificate and just ask for checking to be sure it is the correct father.

The Cow Gap Lane apparently didn't last long.

1901 - Hawes Side Laborer
1891 - Hawes Side - Laborer
1887 - Cow Gap Lane
1881 - Puddle House Farm - 45 acres - living with father
1871 - Cabbage Hall - 24 acres - living with father

Hi susanne

Did you check under CORDWELL sometimes A's and O's get mixed up depending on how bad the writing is?

Are the siblings christened at the same church?  It would be unusual not to christen the elder three.

Do you know which church Richard Cardwell & Janet Carr were married in?
Maybe the older children were christened at that church.

Cheers
Genni

The christening records for the younger children all show Poulton-Le-fylde as does the marriage record for the parents.

There are a total of 11 children that I can find so far.  I have located christening and birth for #s 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.  Robert is number 3.

The "male" child's record does say that it is also Poulton, so once I check for misspellings, I may have a better idea.

According to local history Cow Gap Lane is now Waterloo Road which I can assure you is very much "up and running" well at certain points of rush hour is crawling.

I too have an interest in Cardwell on "the Moss" of which Cow Gap Lane or Waterloo Road is a part/boundary of.

The family I am interested in is Richard with a possible link to father James who may have been at Poulton le Fylde.

Having local knowledge one way or another, it is still confusing to me too - but there is the firm belief that the Cardwells from the Moss are not related to the Cardwell's further east in Wesham/Kirkham......'mmmmm I personally am not too sure about this ....but without proof I remain quiet!! -ish.

There-in lies a mystery begging to be solved.
