I can tell you, Allegs I have seen it written many a way over the years!!

I was just looking through the limited ships returns etc I have copies of, to see if any of the names come up.
Sorry no. Just a Charles Penn aged 27 in the crew on the July 1872 Crew Agreement of "The Hannibal". Another one of that clan, I guess.

My lot used to do the 'coal run' up the coast from Sussex to Sunderland and back, mainly.

I live about 5 mins from Littlehampton if you ever need a photo or a grave hunt etc!

I can't see the Grimsey's, Edmund or William on the 51, 61 or 71.... can you?

yep -guess so!!

1851
HO107 1651 393 8

Poling
Benjamin Penn 45 Labourer bn Poling
Ann 45 bn W Ferry?
Benjamin 15 bn Poling
? ? ? 12 bn P
Alfred 10 bn P
jemima 8 bn P
Charles 5 bn P
Ellen 10 mthd bn P

Next door one way is a Charles and Sarah Penn + 7 children, and next door to them is a William and Martha Penn + 3 children
In the other direction, next door is a William Penn age 70 with 68 yr old wife Mary.

now - I was right about them being an established Poling family!!!

(Thanks for the local look up offer Allegs. Fortunately I have a brother in Sussex with whom I do all my Fam Hist research. Over the years I think he had visited every graveyard, and photographed every house etc....)

So basically the whole of Poling was pretty much inhabited by Penn's!   :D I know someone who lives there now, it's a gorgeous little hamlet.

Yes - unchanged since the days of my ancestors. And in the graveyard you will find an Edmonds gravestone which is one of the most informative ever - mentions 'in memory' of a couple of daughters who are buried elsewhere....  I could get carried away here with the story of the Edmonds from Poling.!!!
I guess they knew several of these poor chaps who perished at Flamborough.

Right! Back to searching for Grimseys!!

Grrrrr I'm trying to link this thread with another one Pete has put on the Yorkshire boards about people taking photo's of the headstones at Flambrough but the link keeps taking me back to the index plage not this page even though I've typed it 100% the same......

I can't find the Grimseys anywhere.....  Grimsey seems to be a popular name in Suffolk and Essex, there are none in Sussex in 1851 or 1861...
