Please help find army records at the National Archives
« on: Monday 07 April 08 21:40 BST (UK) »
I am going to the National Archives next week to try and find an ancestors Army records and would love some pointers as I am really stuck.

All I know is on the 1901 cencus Henry Charles Hamilton b.1880 (oct/Nov/Dec) was at Shorncliffe Camp.

I have been to the National Archives before and looked at (with no luck):

WO97/2963 Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents Subseries within WO 97  1883-1900: discharge papers arranged by range of surname (WO 97/2172-4231)

WO97/5028  Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents Subseries within WO 97  1900-1913: discharge papers, arranged by range of surname. (WO 97/4232-6322)

I do not know any regiment etc. and I have no other Army details, so any help would be really helpfull of where to look at the National Archives.

Thanks

Jason

What does it say your chaps occupation was on the census??

It wasn't only soldiers were at these camps...Tailors, sutlers, mess staff, all sorts, so he may not have even been a squaddie....
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Perhaps he carried his service on through the Great War?

Have you scanned the Medal Index Cards??

He would only have been 34 in 1914 so may well have been in WW1.  There is a Henry Charles Hamilton listed on medal cards

so you could try the microfilm for service records when you go.  A long shot but worth a try

He is listed as an inmate on the 1901 Cencus

Plus there are lots of ordinary Henry Hamiltons listed on the medal cards too.... I just had a look at the Henry Charles one but not surprisingly it didn't give much information I'm afraid...

If you are going to National Archives it is worth a go. I would have thought his records would have been in the two WO97 you have already looked at -and as they are not - the WW1 records are definitely a possibility..

Good Luck
