Charleville (Rath Luirc), in the parish of Rathgogan, was founded in 1661 by Roger Boyle, better known as Lord Broghill. He named the town after King Charles II of England. The borough of Charleville was granted a Royal Charter in 1670 and returned two members to the British Parliament.
