GILLATLY/GILLETLY/GALLETLY ???
« on: Friday 11 April 08 02:03 BST (UK) »

I am looking for John Gillatly born 1820 Perthshire.  Have found some in Cargill
at a farm or estate called "Huntlingbush"but don't believe that line is the one I'm looking for.

I believe another John GILLATLY born 1820 Perthshire went to Australia.

Will add more in a jiff..have to go back to my forum.

In the 1869 South Australian Government Gazette there is listed a letter detained for sea postage addressed to Mrs James Devine at Forthou, Parish of Portland, St. Johns, New Brunswick. If this is my Mrs James Devine, then her maiden name was Gillately. I always thought there may have been a Canadian connection to my Gillately family. A couple of years back someone researching Gillately in Canada made inquiries to me about the family in Australia but I have lost contact.
Any Canadian connections among your Gillately/Gellately's?

Hi, I am not a GILLATELY, but I live in Saint John,New Brunswick. The letter's proper address was "Fort Howe, Parish of Portland, Saint John, NB".

That being said I found a death of James DEVINE and later his wife Ann, both of Fort Howe. This "Fort Howe" was on a prominent hill, built in the 1700's, overlooking the harbour. The neighbourhood later used that name but it was only a small area of several blocks, so I am fairly certain this would be your DEVINEs. There  are possible children in some transcripts too. The name GILLATELY was not mentioned. This was found in the newspaper extracts on the Provincial Archives site at http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/NewspaperVitalStats/Search.aspx?culture=en-CA

It would be my guess that they were Irish immigrants as most of the residents in that area were and probably married in Ireland before they came over. I can't find the name GILLATELY (various spellings) anywhere.Unfortunately the 1851 census of Portland Parish was destroyed.

I hope this helps,
Suzanne Carter
