The reference to the NW Frontier is of interest. My photo shows a boy (mid teens? ) and was taken in Norwich (about 1870 the photographer was in business).
James is in uniform (but no insignia can be identified) He has spurs on his boots indicating cavalry?
He was born in Pailton but the family moved to B'ham (St Thomas area) before 1857. James is on the 1861 census with his family, but then disappears.
My theory is that he enlisted in B'ham, training took him to Norwich, he had his photo taken and then went o'seas. Family story says news was received that he was "missing in action" in India.
My gt grandmother left England in 1878 bringing the photo with her.
I am sure the Military would have lists of those who died/ were missing in action from O'seas excursions and that's why I thought the Museum might have information.
Thanks for your help - tis interesting that the Royal Warks were in the right area around the time I want viz 1868- 70!
Cheers
Marlene
