I am looking for any information on Thomas Gilligan (wife Ebegail?) who had a son Michael, born in 1811 in Mountmellick. A date of birth, date of marriage, anything...Thanks, Maxene

Hello maxene,

You'll have to rely on Church records as Michaet was born prior to the introduction of Civil Registration in Ireland. This happened in 1864. Marriages of Non Catholic were registered from 1845 onwards.

Thanks Christopher. :) Can you tell me if the Church records are part of the Irish records that are slowly being organised? Or is it a case that I will need to have someone in Ireland physically search for me? Sorry about my ignorance. Maxene

As far as I remember Mountmellick in in County Laois (Queens County), which is a county that is not included on the on-line parish register site irish-roots.ie

Any surviving Catholic parish record are in the National Library in Dublin on microfilm, they have a list of the parishes available and the film number on their website www.nli.ie.

The timeline may not fit but there are four Thomas Gilligans in Co. Laois in the townlands of BROCKAGH, CLONASLEE, and two in COOLABOGHLAN. These are all in the parish of KILMANMAN

not sure if any of these areas are close to Mountmellick....
