WW2 ship sinking
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 08:06 BST (UK) »
Hi.  I am trying to find out about a ship that was sunk during WW2 in Asian waters.  My uncle was killed when his ship went down in February 1942 he is in Kranji cemetary - singapore.  i have been told his ship sinking was one of churchill's mistakes and very hush hush but would still like to find out which ship it was.  He date of death is approx 26th febraury 1042 - albert shepherd was 22 years old (T280661) and was due to transfer to be with my grand father unfortunately he died before this could happen.  He couldn;t swim.

Any help and info would be appreciated

What does his death certificate say?

He is listed in GRO War Deaths Army Other Ranks 1939-1948
Shepherd Albert Pte T/260661 RASC 1942 12 298

If you don't have it you can order the certificate through the usual channels.

Are you sure it was on a ship? Singapore fell to the Japanese on  15th February 1942.

The Java Sea Battle, February 1942

.....and half an hour later the destroyer HMS Jupiter was hit by either an undetected mine or a well placed torpedo, erupted with an explosion, became disabled and sunk at 9.25pm. http://www.geocities.com/dutcheastindies/java_sea.html

Or this about the ship itself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Jupiter_(F85)

Always worth doing a search.  Don't think Churchill laid the mine ;D
