Croydon Crown Court 1849
« on: Friday 18 April 08 08:31 BST (UK) »
My husband's 2 x great Grandfather, James  TAYLOR was tried in the C C Court , June 1849 as a 20 year old then sent out to Tamania for 10 years. I have worked out that the 'C C ' before the Court stands for Croydon Crown, which is I am assuming  near London city?

His 'Native Place' was recorded as 'City Road'....can anyone help me work out where exactly/roughly this City Road was/is?
His calculated year of birth is 1829 -1831 worked out from Convict record, age at mge and death.

In his 1910 death notice, Captain James Staines Taylor's widow had 'Late London' included in the notice and had ' UK papers to copy' the notice, so am assuming he still had family living there.
Still deciphering [trying to anyway] what he was tried for but that's another matter...[Mmmm...where best to post that querie??]
Thanks for any help in this matter
Cheers :)

Hi

Have found out it stands for Central Criminal Court, have found his sentencing in a newspaper report.

Have you tried the free Gale newspaper trial.

http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/

You maybe might find some more info on James and any of your other ancestors.

 ;D ;D

"CC Court" would be the Central Criminal Court, popularly known as the Old Bailey.

City Road is in central London and can be found on any street map.

Thank you both for the quick replies. Unfortunately I cannot access the 'free' Gale paper trial from here in South Oz suffolk*sue. :(
I shall go and have a look at Old Bailey Online - thanks S*S.
Whilst waiting I did look at the 1841 Census for his name in Mdx county aged 10 -15 and found a 9 yr old  James Taylor in the Staines Registration Dist.
This possibly explains the useage of 'Staines as a middle name through many generations of Taylors in Tassie. Makes sense???

I wouldn't be so sure about that.  There are plenty of James TAYLORs to choose from in the 1841 census of Middlesex and see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Road for an explanation of "City Road".

I think so as well Suffolk*sue. I went and had a look just before I took the dog for his walk. Dates match...now to find the right James Taylor on the Census. :( I need to see if I can find the 9 year old from Staines reg dist on the 1851 but findmypast.com haven't got it yet. Any help available on this part??

Casalguidi ...thanks for the Wikipeaedia link...looking now. I still would wager the Staines part though have to yet prove it ;)

To be completely honest, seeing as the trial proceedings says he was living in lodgings, then James could have come from anywhere.

One piece I liked in the article, he appeared to have been called "Jem". A lovely personal anecdote.  ;D
