Family History Book for a 10 year old
« on: Monday 21 April 08 13:07 BST (UK) »
My Grandson has expressed an interest in genealogy, and wants me to help him with his family tree.
Can anyone recommend a book on family history suitable for a 10 year old.
I want to encourage him, and I thought if he had his own book on the subject  it might help to keep him interested.

Regards siskin.

There are lots of books for beginners but I can't ever recall seeing one specifically for children.
Have you had a look in the rootschat bookshop? (top of the page, just left of centre)
I know there are charts you can buy for children, but these are usually very simple and don't go much further back than grandparents.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I  have looked at the books you mention, and shall certainly will be buying one of them.
I am very keen to encourage  a future genealogist!!!!  I was delighted when he showed so much interest in his ancestors, and felt if he had a book aimed at his age group it would fire his enthusiasm even more.

Many thanks for your help and interest,
siskin.

You are so right to encourage him Siskin.

I really wish I had been interested at that age, when my gran told me the list that she had learnt of her maternal surnames going back about 8 generations I might have taken more notice and found things a whole lot easier now.

I do agree, wish I had started much earlier!

Hope he enjoys his new hobby and that it leads to great things  :)

That's wonderful, a boy of 10 becoming interested in family history!

Do hope you find a book that will really fire up his interest, siskin!  Perhaps you should encourage him to join Rootschat.  I know we have young members, but he could be the youngest!

What a great thread. I think I might order that DK book for my 9-year-old son. He too is interested. He's played on Ancestry a bit and is always asking questions. And he and my 6-year-old daughter are very good at determining relationships.

I think my son might really enjoy this.

Thanks for starting the thread Siskin, and thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
