I haven't worked out who these Douglas people are? A different Gabriel to Gabriel 1784? See below  :o

This looks to be Gabriel in the 1841 census. I'll list as is showing on FreeCen rather than the other index.  Everyone showing as born in the county:

Gabriel Douglass 55, inn keeper,
Jane Douglass    45
Richard Douglass 25, Independent
Ann Douglass    5
Marry Gerran    25, servant
James Gibb    20, printer
Margt Nouat    10
Marry Nouat    15
Marry Wallace    15, servant
John Anderson    20, coachman

Address: Tempelhill, Dundonald Ayrshire

Hello Rockhoper,

I believe this is the same Gabriel than was born in 1874. I am not sure who the other people listed at that address (The Portland Inn Hotel) are.

Reddell, Douglas, Long, Cairns, Dumars

Yes I agree about it being the same Gabriel - his first wife Elizabeth Paterson died c1831 and he married Margaret Anderson on 28/2/1832 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.  Gabriel was a Watchmaker and Inkeeper and Vintner and Margaret a Vintner - they were at the Portland Arms Troon by 1837 to 1846 (at least)
I'm wondering if Richard 25 "Independent" was another son - he would have been born c1816 with Ann Douglas 5 being Richard's daughter? I wonder too if John Anderson 20 "Coachman" was a nephew of Margarets? The girls are likely Mary Wallace Howat 18 and Margaret Howat 12 - even though their ages don't match the Census (also Nouat does not make sense as a name). Who then is Jane 45? A bit of a puzzle ::)
