Ellison Belfast/WhiteTyrone
« on: Sunday 16 January 05 21:57 GMT (UK) »
Looking for Ellisons, possibly in Balmoral Avenue Belfast, between the wars or late 1800's/early 1900's. Could be a connection with Co. Tyrone - name of White  - possibly Carrickmore.
Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Hi Anthony,
Many thanks for all the Ellisons, I will keep them on file. I am very interested in the D. White from Lissonally Omagh. Do you know where this place is exactly? I have failed to find it on the map.
Regards, Carol.

Hi Carol. On my Ordnance Survey map Lissn is about 2/3 miles south of Omagh on the A5T road.

Hi Carol,

Balmoral Avenue is one of the areas in Belfast where the wealthier members of the community tended to live. It does not appear in the 1852 or 1861 directories. Most of the properties there and the surrounding locality were probably built in the late 1800s - early 1900s.

I have looked at another forum and found a Robert Ellison born in Liverpool in the late 1800s. He and his parents moved to Belfast when he was one year old.

Mention is made of a master mariner, Captain G. Ellison, in LLoyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping. I have no further information about him but I would not rule out the Liverpool to Belfast family and this fellow.

Checking Belfast Street Directories for the period 1890 - 1920 might produce some helpful information

http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk The Belfast & Province of Ulster Directory 1861 mentions a John Ellison, linen manufacturer, residence Eglinton Terrace, Crumlin Road, Belfast.

Hi Everyone,
Many thanks for all your interest and help. I think I have made progress on the Whites of Tyrone!By the way does anyone know where Arboe is? Is it near Omagh?
Briefly, I have found a George White who married Isabella Orr 8/1/1856 at Arboe (source Arboe Parish Church). Children: George Robert b.7/10/1862 and Mary Jane b. 19/11/1864. Sadly no sign of my grandmother Ellen who would have been born c.1861. The reason I think they might be 'my Whites' is threefold - I have discovered that Ellen's father's name was George, I have a photograph of an old woman and younger man which I have always been told was my Gr. grandmother White and written on the back is 'mother with George' (??Isabella and her son George??) and Ellen had a sister Mary Jane who is the possible Ellison connection. The dates fit, the names fit - I just need to find Ellen!!
Cheers for now,
Carol.

Thanks for info. on Arboe - nowhere near Omagh but still my best shot so far!! Might pay a visit next time I'm over.
Do you know the earliest available census for Ireland and how to go about searches? All the 'on line' searches seem to be for England & Wales only.

Carol.
