DINGLE family query
« on: Thursday 24 April 08 22:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm descended from John DINGLE who married Catherine Richards in St Buryan  on 1st June 1789; John was listed as a sojourner. The DINGLE family settled in the BREAGE/GERMOE area, but before this date, I have no information regarding John's roots or which part of the county he came from, as I have not come across any Dingle families in West Cornwall previous to this date. I would estimate that John Dingle's year of birth would be c. 1765

I did find that an Edward Dingle was buried at Germoe on 30 July 1839, of Kenneggy Downs , aged 72 - giving his year of birth as c. 1767 , & I have a feeling that he might well have been a brother to John, considering up to then there had not been any Dingles in the Germoe/Breage area.

If anyone can help me or has any ideas re: helping me find out about the parentage of my John Dingle, that would be great.

Thanks
James

Hi James,

Dingle is very common in Cornwall I am afraid  :'(

If you take a look at any of the large databases you will see what I mean. (They go right back to 1500's) I have only had a quick look and I did find and an Edward b in 1766 in Linkinhorne - The only Edward I spotted born around the right time. (Admittedly, if this was them we are talking one end of Cornwall to the other) He does have a brother John 1762 (Children of John Dingle of Darley and Elizabeth)

Cheers Kris  :D

Alas looking further there are children born to Father Edward 20 odd years later in Linkinhorne so seems unlikely  :'( Still there are many, many Dingle's out there in earlier times. Since you are interested in Althea's area she may be able to help you...............Kris  :D

Sorry I just realised you said West Cornwall - not just Cornwall   :-[

Hey guys ...thanks for your help. Certainly some food for thought there ... I'd certainly be interested to look at Edward Dingle's will ...might provide any clues.

Have checked the sites I know of from here
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~althea/Wills%20from%20CRO%20for%20website%20version2.htm
but can't see anyone has transcribed Edwards as yet.

You can get wills on film from LDS, Kris maybe able to tell you more. I'm not near an LDS centre so do not use films. Otherwise if you have someone visiting CRO they could look

PS. Searching by parish batch numbers, at Germoe C022202 there are Dingle baps from 1790. Parents John and Catherine, ah I see these are yours...so they baptised their children at Germoe.

I have done the banns film for Germoe that covers their marriage, and no banns for a John Dingle..so although they settled there it seems unlikely that he was from there and was a real sojourner...???

The info you had for the marriage was it from the BANNS - Registers Banns 1754–1812, 1824–1993 [P23/1/25] CRO. http://www.west-penwith.org.uk/wpenmar.htm#Buryan
if not check with the OPC or may be worth getting the film, it may give a parish for John

Sorry the LDS meaning the films you can order at family history centres
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
YOu can search the catalogue online and see what records are available for each parish/county.

Once you find something though, always pay to check with the OPC helper for that area, because they may have access to the films/doing transcriptions (that are not online)
