I have John Garbutt born 1805 Knilesworth married Hannah. When did they marry? Also John appears in 1841 as Garbutt,1851 as Garbutt Winspear, and Garbutt in 1861,WHY? Any help much appreciated. His children are listed as Garbutt, but when they marry they use Garbutt Winspear....

Hi Binka,

I'm not sure where Knilesworth is but a possible explanation as to why John uses different names could be that he was born illegitimately to a Miss Winspear who later married a Garbutt (with Mr Garbutt possibly even being John's actual father)

Extracted IGI christening:

JOHN WINSPER
Birth 23 JUN 1802 - Christening 29 AUG 1802 Hawnby, Yorkshire
Mother ELIZABETH WINSPER

Extracted IGI marriage:
ELIZABETH WINSPEAR - JOHN GARBUT
Marriage 13 NOV 1804   Hawnby, Yorkshire

 :)

Added:

I suppose you've seen this member-submitted record on the IGI?
JOHN GARBUTT WINSPEAR - HANNAH STONEHOUSE
Marriage 22 AUG 1835   Lastingham, Yorkshire

Hi,

I think you'll find he was born in SNILESWORTH which is in the parish of Hawnby.  Hawnby PRs are transcribed on Genuki and show the birth and marriage as above.  I have Lastingham PR transcript on CD which shows the marriage but no more details.  Think Tati's interpretation of events is a reasonable assumption.

Cheers

Hi Binka,

There is a Monumental Inscription in Hawnby that says John Garbutt Winspear erected a stone in memory of his grandparents Ann Flintoft (died 1822 aged 75) and William Flintoft (died 1829 aged 92).

Thankyou how interesting. So does that make John's real father a Flintoft? As, if he was illigit  son of Elizabeth Winspear who then married John Garbutt. What do you think?

Hi Binka,

I'm afraid I have no idea.  Perhaps if you looked at the Hawnby parish records you might get further info.

By the way, I have John Garbutt Winspear as a witness to the Will of one of my ancestors who lived in Snilesworth.  There is a Garbutt connection to the family but I've no idea if it includes John.
