GILES marriages in Warminster: Is there an Index?
« on: Tuesday 29 April 08 16:27 BST (UK) »
Dear Listers

I have recently discovered that at least one member of a family I am researching moved from Wanstrow in Somerset to Warminster in Wiltshire. She is Esther (or Hester) HUMPHRIES who married Benjamin GILES in about 1820, probably in Warminster.

If she was in Warminster when she married, it is likely that her brothers and sisters may also have moved. This would explain why I have been unable to find their marriages in Wanstrow or nearby parishes, despite looking for many years.

The relevant thread is at: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,301708.0.html

I have three questions:
1. Is there any record of the marriage between Benjamin GILES and Esther HUMPHRIES in or about 1820?

2. Is there any sign of the marriage of his son, Benjamin Candy GILES, perhaps to Ann MORGAN, around 1843?

3. Is there any sign of other members of the HUMPHRIES family marrying in Warminster probably in the early years of the nineteenth Century?

Names to look out for are:

Betty (bap 1785)
Mary (bap 1787)
Ann (bap 1789)
Hannah (bap 1791)
Sarah (bap 1793)
Esther (bap 1795 - married Benjamin GILES)
Rebecca (bap 1796)
Benjamin junior (bap 1799 - married Christian GOLLEDGE)

Many thanks indeed for any help with this inquiry. With luck, I could be on the verge of solving a mystery (namely what happened to Benjamin HUMPHRIES and his wife Betsy (nee CANDY) which has perplexed me for thirty years.

Kind regards

Philip Candy

Many thanks Tazzie.

I think that the marriage was to Ann MORGAN, given the name in subsequent Census records and an etry on IGI, which mistakenly says the marriage occurred in Yorkshire!!

I am hoping that there might be a transcription of the marriage regsiters which would give extra information such as witnesses' names and the fathers of both parties - especially the bride!

Let's hope someone can help, but many thanks for confirming the year and Quarter.

Kind regards

Hi Tazzie

This is certainly worth following up, although the ages are a bit out of kilter.

I will try to find these people in 1841 and see if that sheds any more light on relationships.

Thanks

Philip

Hi Philip,

Benjamin Giles married Esther Humphries 10 Jan 1820, St Denys, Warminster.

Benjamin Candy Giles married Ann Morgan 24 Aug 1843, St Denys, Warminster.  Both parties aged 18.  His father Benjamin Giles, her father John Morgan.

No baptisms listed for any children of Benjamin and Esther in Warminster  :(

Curiously, another marriage for a Benjamin Giles in Warminster:
Benjamin Giles married Grace Charlton 18 Feb 1823.

Many thanks indeed for this Nell.

It fits perfectly with what I had expected/hoped.

The IGI shows that all the children were baptised in the local Congregational Chapel, so that explains why they're not in the Parish Registers.

Can I ask you who were the witnesses at Benjamin (senior)'s marriage to Esther HUMPHRIES?

Are there any other HUMPHRIES marriages that match the names of Esther's sisters, around that same time (ca 1820) or maybe a little earlier?

Thanks so much once again for your helpful response.

Kind regards

Philip

Nell

This is probably Benjamin GILES who was baptised in Warminster on 26 November 1823 to George and Elizabeth GILES.  Other names in the same family include Eliza (1815); Hannah (about 1820); William (1827) and John (1829).

I suspect that this Benjamin and the other one who married Esther HUMPHRIES in 1820 were cousins.

Best wishes

Philip
