I have found the death of a James Grant, Mar qtr 1862, Oldham, vol 8d page 361. I think that he may be my 3xgt grandfather. Please can anyone add to the information above.

Grant (Oldham, Sheffield, Doncaster)

There are two James Grants in Oldham on the 1861 census:

James Grant age 8, b 1853 in Oldham, son of John and Bridget, living at 190 Barrack Street.  John Grant is a Tailor, born Ireland.

James Grant age 69, born Ireland. Sadly an inmate at Oldham workhouse (on Union St? I think), occupation Chair Mender.

Any good?

hello Barbara,
I know of the James in the workhouse and I am certain that he is my 3xgt grandfather but I cannot connect him with the James who died. I suppose that I could send for his death cert' but am reluctant to do so in case it is not my James.

thank you for responding,
Malcolm

Death certificate probably wouldn't tell you much about his relatives if he was alone in the workhouse - might say 'widower of..' if you are lucky. That's all I got from my workhouse rellie in Manchester.

You might be better off contacting Oldham Local Studies on the offchance that some older records have survived

link is at the bottom of this article which has a truly gruesome description of the workhouse in 1866 :'(

Good luck
Barbara
