I am hoping someone may know about a Patrick McGrath, born around 1878-80 in the parish of St Finn Barre, Cork City. Patrick was a soldier in the Royal Artillery and later married a Eveline Browne in 1907, Dublin. His father was also Patrick, a farmer.

Any info is appreciated, any tips or knowledge about the area he was born at the time.

One of my ancestors a Samuel Hodges was married in the same church in 1854 and he was a Coastguard.

Is there a military/navy connection to marriages here  - Samuel is trasferred from his posting in Dublin to a ship (Pelter) and vanishes for 4 years then later reappears when he marries a nurse in this church. I was wondering if maybe he was wounded and stayed in some army/navy hospital in the area?

Shane.

Hi there is a Patrick McGrath born 5 March 1878 Cork
Parents: Patrick McGrath & Mary Forde

You could order the birth cert from the GRO
http://www.gro.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

The birth cert would give the address of parents and father's occupation.

Hi Gerard,

I have received the birth cert this morning for Patrick McGrath. The father is listed as a labourer so that would tie in with him being a farmer in 1907, however the birth place is Kilnahone, County Cork. The only Kilnahone I can find find is in Tipperary. Also his army service record later states his birthplace as St Finn Barre, Cork City. Any ideas?

There's a Kilnahone townland (229 acres) in Co. Cork: Killanully Parish, Kanturk Poor Law Union, Barony of Kerrycurrihy.
