Hi Suzanne,
you do not need the exact date ( or even the year) to apply for certificates from GRONI.
BMD indexes will not tell you the exact day and month that they died. They tell you what quarter of the year that it is registered in and the district it was registered in, besides age, plus the volume & page no, very much like the English and Welsh BMD Indexes
If you know the year and the area they died , apply with that info. They do a two year search either side of the date year you give them on the application form ( ie a 5 yr search)
Most of the certs that I've ordered from GRONI I have never known the exact date for 100% sure, I've just known the year , and at the very least one of the parent(s )names for birth , or partners names for marriages, and always where the event took place ( except my mum's birth date, and my gran's , the only one's I 100% knew the exact day and month for sure)
Deaths:
I applied for my grandmother's father death cert only knowing the year and where he died and got it. Ie I knew all details except the exact date (day/month)
Apply with the info you have if you know she died in that year of 1926 - or even around it ( 2 years either side) and have some idea what area. On the application form fill in any day, month you care to think of in the year you
"know" she died
If you're not sure of the years another option is to pay for a look up in the indexes first, to see if anyone by that name is registered in the year(s) you think she died - familyulster is one company I have used in the past a few times for index look ups before ordering the certified cert with the GRO
www.familyulster.com . I don't know if there are others about that offer the same sort of service - it's currently 2 pounds a year ( used to be just a pound)
Hope that is of some help
Kind regards
