« on: Wednesday 07 May 08 08:54 BST (UK) »
I am looking for help with this family. Joseph Ryding married a Ellen or Helen Tracey or Tracy nee Woodburn, they lived in Fife and the children Ellen or Helen had were Bessy, Ellen, James, Michall. John Robert and Samuel all with the surname Tracey or Tracy.

Any help will be much appreciated.

It would help if you added some dates to let people focus on any searches  :)

Hi Ann

Please can you tell us where in Fife and when these people lived.

In the mid-nineteenth century the Registrars in Scotland seem to have recorded children by the mother's surname if they were not married to the father unless the father acknowledged the child in which case the father's surname might be used.  The name that the children took in the censuses depended entirely on the whim of whoever provided the information.  My Grandfather was born Dun (his mother's maiden name) but for all his life he went by the name Jackson (after his imputed father).  In your family, the use of the mother's name suggests to me that Joseph may not have been the father (it is perhaps significant that none of the boys was called Joseph).

Helen looks to have died in 1920:

1920   Helen Riding - other name WOODBURN, age 66 at CULROSS/FIFE/PERTH.

Her death cert is available to view on Scotlands People, the official pay to view site for Scottish BMDs. The death cert will include names of her parents including mother's maiden name (if known to the informant).

Hi

The 1891 England census has a Treacey family living at 1a Dyke Street, Arlecdon, Cumberland (RG12 4312 26 p48).  The head of the family is James, a 40 year-old iron ore miner, born in Ireland, Down.  The wife is 40 year-old Ellen, also born in Down.  The children, all born in Alecdon, Cumberland, were

Patrick, 19, Iron ore miner
Thomas, 15, Iron ore labourer
Catherine, 14, General domestic servant
John, 12
Michael, 10
Maggie, 8
James, 6
Ellen, 2
Bessie, 9/12

and there was also a niece Maggie Tape, 5.

Good luck

Hi Ann

Freebmd has an index entry for the death of James Tracey - 1894 Apr-Jun Whitehaven 10b 359.  I cannot find an English marriage between Ellen and Joseph so  guess that she and her family moved to Dunfermline, where she married Joseph.  This is just a guess because the Freebmd index is not complete.  You would need to find a Scottish marriage to be reasonably certain.
