Hi John

A few more questions  ::)

~ Have you found Donald and Martha in the 1901 census to confirm his place of birth
~ What was his mother Jessie's maiden name from his marriage cert
~ What was his age at the time of his marriage
~ What was his father's occupation from his marriage cert (also, did both mother and father show as alive or deceased)

There is one possible birth showing in 1867 Inverness with mother down as Jessie Forbes.

Regards.

Monica  :)

Hi Rayinbeds

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

What else do you have about your grandfather John. Did he die in Scotland? Did he marry your grandmother (do you have her name) to be able to search for a marriage certificate for them?

It's normally better to work back with what you know, so that you can verify information and make sure you are following the right line (specially with Smiths!).

Have you got your mother/father's birth cert. which will include details of parents?

Looking at the 1901 census, there is only one possibility showing for a John with father Andrew and an Inverness-shire birth place:

Andrew Smith 38, Tractior Engine Driver, b. Farres, Morayshire
Jessie Smith 36, b. Boharm, Aberdeenshir
Maggy Smith 14, b. Elgin, Morayshire
William Smith 11, b. Boharm, Banffshire
Jane Smith 8, b. Boharm, Banffshire
Andrew Smith 3, b. Blairgairn, Perthshire
Jassie Ann Smith 3, b. Elgin, Morayshire
John Ellen Smith 6 months, b. Beauly, Invernessshire
Duncan Finlyson 24, Wood Worker & Sawmill, boarder
Rodrick McNeil    25, Wood Worker & Sawmill, boarder

Address: Lonben Wood, Kiltarlity Inverness

The above entry is as transcribed on the census index I am looking at, please don't think it's my bad typing  ;)

Hi John Rayinbeds and Monica,

Although you have found a John Smith with father Andrew, Monica, I think we could be looking at another possibility of him being born after 1901. John Rayinbeds will need to confirm of course, but there is this death in 1936 at Inverness.

John Edward Smith, insurance agent, married to Jessie Jane MacKenzie
d. May 2nd 1936, aged 34
parents: Andrew Green Smith, postman (retired) and Elizabeth MacKenzie (deceased)

hume24 :)

PS.  I was looking at the original post when I said John! Sorry. :-[

You are absolutely right Hume, one of the reasons for working back with what you know.

That death sound possible. Hopefully Rayinbeds has enough info to confirm it is the right one. There is a marriage showing for an Andrew Smith and Eliza MacKenzie in Forres, Moray in 1898 which may be likely.
