Henty family, Ferring in 1861

Hi,

This family is of no relation to me but I live in Ferring and wanted to find more info about my village.

The Henty's lived at the Grange, the big manor house in the village.

Edwin Henty married Laura Frances Boghurst in the Worthing district in 1838

They had (at least) the following children;
Laura Catherine in 1840
Maria in 1841
Edwin in 1844 and
Arthur in c1849 (I can't find his birth)

The 1851 is as follows;
Edwin Henty, head, 46, Magistrate and banker, born Ferring
Laura F Henty, wife, 32, born Ashford
Laura C Henty, dau, 10, home schooled, born Ferring
Maria Henty, 9, dau, home schooled, born Ferring
Edwin Henty, 7, son, home schooled, born Ferring
Arthur Henty, 2, son, born Ferring
Frederick Henty, nephew, 16, scholar at Westminster, born Godmanchester
Maria Clade, teacher
Susan Lavers, cook
Fanny Slaughter, nursemaid
Ellen Batcock, housemaid
Sarah Kring, nursemaid
William Barnard, servant

Laura C Henty married George C Joad in the Worthing district in 1860.  She died in 1916 aged 76.

I cannot find any of the Henty's in 1861, neither can I find Laura Joad nee Henty.  I can't find any deaths which fit either.

I have the family in 1841 and going backwards.

Hi Legs,

Do you have Edwin's baptism at Ferring?  Here it is from the PRTS transcript, just in case.  (My additions in brackets.)

28/02/1805 Edwin [son of] George [&] Ann HENTY.  Born 24/02/1805

The same source has Arthur's baptism and birthday.

08/06/1848 Arthur [son of] Edwin [&] Laura Frances HENTY, Banker.  Born 07/04/1848

Thank you for that, I'd been unable to locate Arthurs birth or baptism at all and although I had Edwins baptism and parents it is great to have his birth date.

Hi Legs,

I can't help with the 1861 census, but as for Joad deaths - well, there are a couple of memorials at St John the Divine, Patching.  Both to Laura C Henty.  I know you have the year of her death, but here are the inscriptions in case they can provide any additional details.

1) In the church yard - an urn on a triple plinth: "In loving memory of Laura Catherine Joad died August 31st 1916 aged 76 years."

2) A marble plaque inside the church: "In loving and grateful memory of Laura Catherine Joad of Patching widow of George C Joad born May 7th 1840 entered into rest August 31st 1916. In Thy presence is fullness of Joy. By the expressed desire of her brother Edwin Henty of Ferring Grange this tablet is placed by her sister-in-law Alma Georgiana Henty."

PS There are no other Joad inscriptions at any of the churches covered by the CD.
