SUTTON Family - Thomas ? Romford Area

I am wondering if anyone has information on the Sutton family from Essex. Thomas was, I believe, a Solicitor or legal clerk and he had at least one son- Mark Benham Sutton who married Sophia Wright from Romford.
Both Mark and Sophia migrated to Australia in 1872 aboard the "John Rennie".

Hello Baron,
I have been tracking my Sutton family for about 2 years - all born Dagenham. I have previously looked at yours because of similar names, and some of your family were born in Dagenham when mine were. My gr.gr.gr. gr. grandfather was also a Thomas but he died abt 1837. I have  tracked yours 1841 to 1871 previously to see if there was a link - maybe a cousin. Your Thomas was a sawyer in 1841 census - age 50. Wife Sarah age 40. Children:-
Thomas  13, James 12, William 10, Johnathan 5, Mark 1. Living Salem House Collier Row, Romford.  1851 Living COllier Row. Sarah widow. Receiving parish relief. All children except Mark born Dagenham, Mark Romford. Thomas, James & Johnthan Ag. Labs. Also a granddaughter Sarah b. 1845 Romford. 1861 still Collier Row. Sarah (born Stapleford Abbots) with Mark occupation sawyer.  My Suttons were Henry born 1837, mother Elizabeth Sutton.  Hope this info is of help - I think they are your Marks - he was the only Mark born around then. regards.

Hi,

I have Mark Benham Sutton and his wife Sophia Wright on my tree.  Sophia was part of the family of Wrights from whom I am descended via my father.  Sophia's brother Charles was my father's Grandfather.

Mark and Sophia went on to have 9 more children in New South Wales Australia after emigrating there.  I made contact recently with 2 families who are descendants of Sophia and Mark and I met up with one of them recently when they came over to England for a holiday to see where their roots were.  I took them to 32 Waterloo Road (now gone) and various other places of interest in Romford which thrilled them so much.  Incidentally, 32 Waterloo Road was also the home of one of my ancestors in the Wright family (haven't got the record to hand).  I have photos of Sophia and Mark and lots of information about the family.

I have read your very informative posts regarding the Sutton family. I am descended through Sarah and Thomas via their son Mark, then his daughter Julia Sutton, and then her daughter Mary Jane (Anne) Harrison. I would be very interested to read a copy of Mark's diary of his voyage to Australia.

This is a lovely surprise.  I have Mary A Sutton on my tree but nothing else for her so you are a first for that branch.  I do have photos of Julia though via others with whom I an in touch.  Can we correspond via email?  I will send you a private message if I can work out how!

Hello,

I have just started investigating my mothers side of the family ' Sutton ' and came across this site after doing a google search for my Mothers great grandfather Mark Benham Sutton married to Sophia Wright.

I discovered from this thread that Mark's father was Thomas Sutton and that he was married to a Sarah ?

My Mums grandfather was William Sutton ( son of Mark Benham Sutton ) born 1875 died Tummut NSW 1924, married to Ellen Marie Brown  born 28 / 5 / 1881 died 1960.

I am trying to find out information regarding William Sutton's 12 siblings and their descendants as well as any other family history.

Hello Diane, I would be so grateful to read a copy of Mark Benham Sutton and Sophia ' Wright ' Sutton diary of their journey by ship to Australia back in 1872
