Hackney marriage-Marshall
« on: Sunday 11 May 08 10:30 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the record of the marriage of George Christopher Marshall and Elizabeth Billings. I think it was in Hackney in the first quarter of 1843.
Can anybody help please? Maureen

Hi Maureen!  :D  The George & Elizabeth Marshall you speak of are also my ancestors; my g-g-g-grandparents. I descend from their son Alfred.

I have their marriage certificate & also George's death cert if you're interested? (I can scan & email to you anytime).

In fact just received the death cert today -- in the 1871 census George (an engraver) appeared to be going along swimmingly with the family on Elizabeth Place in Hackney.

Knew he died in 1873 & thought there wouldn't be much to happen in 2 years. Poor bloke however ended up in Bethnal Green Lunatic Asylum (Bethnal House) suffering from "general paralysis" in those last few years. (Look that up in Google, fascinating!).

From the marriage cert I know his dad was also George (a music teacher) who had to have been in Jersey at some point when George Christopher was born c.1820 -- do you happen to know any more about this family?

Just had some brilliant finds re: Elizabeth Billings' family too, but will keep this brief & save for next time if you're interested.

 :D Linda

Hi Linda ;D ;D ;D
I am so thrilled to hear from you I have been looking for this family for ages and had decided there was no one else out there. I have the marriage Certificate but I would love a copy of the death certificate. I looked up on google NASTY!
I may be able to give you some info. Do you have the 1861 census they were in Elizabeth St. with Christopher, Thomas, Rachael, George and Alfred. Elizabeth and Harriet are in the 1871 census.
I have some information on the two Georges and a lot of info on Christopher,Elizabeth and Rachael. Christopher was my husbands GGrandfather. Can I email you? I would love to hear about the Billings.
Cheers
Maureen

Hi Linda
If you go to Help it will tell you how to send a personal message I think you have to have 3 posts before you can send or receive one.
I think George Marshall the music teacher may have been born in Jersey and George Junior was born there in St Hellier on 8th september 1819 his mother was Mary Ann it was a private baptism so not many records. There was also a sister born in or abt. 1817 I find it hard to track things in Jersey especially at that time.
Christopher married Harriet Deane in 1869 and at that stage his address was Elizabeth Place. They immigrated to NZ in 1874 and his sisters Elizabeth and Rachael went with them.  :) :) :)

Well! That's a lot more than I knew - thank you so much!  ;D

I did see in the Channel Isl. Jersey census a couple named George & Mary Marshall as follows:

- [1841] George, age 55, born England occ: Quarryman
- [1841] Mary, age 45, born England

- [1851] George, age 64, born England occ: House Proprietor
- [1851] Mary, age 60, born England

- [1861] George, age 74, born England occ: Labourer
- [1861] Mary, age 71, born England

... do you think they're the parents of George Christopher Marshall?

Ooh! And this will be my 3rd post, so I'll go check out the Help thing now.  :D

p.s. I've been doing NZ research too! A couple of generations of my main line (Helliwell) moved there in the mid-late 1800s, and then my great grandfather was born there in Wellington. His son moved to Australia & that's why I ended up here  ;)  You've seen the NZ newspaper archives and the new BDM index haven't you?
