« on: Sunday 11 May 08 22:09 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am looking for any info. regarding my ancestor William Erridge and his family. He was married to Eliza Langley and they had at least three sons named John, Albert, and James. The family lived around Deal,Dover, Kingsdown, or Ringswould in the 1840's before emmigrating to North America. Thank You for any help.

I have conflicting info. on Williams birthdate. Anywhere from 1811 to 1821 approx. His oldest son Albert was born in 1843 in Dover. Albert fought with the 89th New York Infantry during the American Civil War and, despite being wounded twice, survived to  a ripe old age. I have his Union Army service records and know his birthdate and place are correct. I was hoping to find out about William's marriage to Eliza Langley. Must have been in that 1835 to 1840 time frame. Any advice? Thank You for your kind responses.

Hi Tofrek

There are these marriages in that area July 1837 to 1850 :-\

1838 Mary ERRIDGE to William MINTER
1838 Richard HERRIDGE to Sarah MOAT

1841 William Ashinton ERRIDGE to Elizabeth Manwell PARKER

1843 Sarah Ann ERRIDGE to Alfred PAY

1844 Elizabeth ERRIDGE to David CONNOLLY

1845 Joseph Thomas ERRIDGE to Mary Jane CAVELL
1845 Richard HERRIDGE to Mary NASH
1845 Jane HERRIDGE or KERRIDGE to Tyson WETHERHOG

1847 Henry James ERRIDGE to .............
1847 Eliza Ann ERRIDGE to ...............

1850 George William ERRIDGE to ...............

Do you actually have a birth certificate or baptism entry for Albert ERRIDGE?  Have you found him as ERRIDGE on all the available USA census and what is the source of his birth date & place (ie. was he born in Dover itself or one of the nearby towns or villages?) and names of his parents?

Albert was born in 1845. My math skills are found wanting once again. The military records I have contain at least 10 different birthplace entries all of which Albert listed as Dover,England. William and Eliza farmed in and around Ionia, Michigan for 50+ years after emmigrating. I have the U.S. census info. Their second son John was my Great Great Grandfather. He lived in Ontario, Canada. I have Johns' death certificate from 1920 which names his parents, William Erridge and Eliza Langley. It lists his country of birth as England. I have contemporary newspaper accounts from the time of Johns death listing his brothers Albert and James of Ionia, Michigan. All this supported by Census info. My English info. is sketchy beyond Alberts' birthdate and place. All members of the family are listed as being born in England in the U.S. and Canadian census records.

I think I've found something - though at the opposite end of the county to Dover ;)

William HERIDG (son of John, lab) married Eliza LANGLEY (dau of Robert, mariner) at Frindsbury, Kent 28 Oct 1838 witnessed by Richard EMERY and Mary Ann RAMBLE

I haven't yet looked further to see if there is many mention of children in the Frindsbury baptism registers http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bl/ - update see post below:

I have found this family in the 1841 census - it's the nearest match I could see :-\

1841

Workhouse Lane, Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent

William HURRAGE 35 ag lab b.Kent
Eliza 23 b.Kent
William 16 months b.Kent
/
Richard WEBB 11 b.Kent

HO107/474 folio 21 page 3

This looks like the baptism of baby William ORRIGE ........... at the village of Stoke, Kent
http://www.rootschat.com/links/03el/ (Stoke would come under the registration district of Hoo and match the birth registration of a William ERRIDGE in 1840 http://freebmd.rootsweb.com )

I think one of the biggest problems here is the different spellings - I have also come across UR(R)I(D)GE ;D

You might find the following maps helpful in establishing where these places were in relation to each other:

East Kent http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/Location/02.htm
West Kent http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/Location/01.htm

Also, the organisation of the registration districts (for birth, marriage and death purposes post 1837) http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/ken.htm
