Missing relative!
« on: Monday 12 May 08 07:49 BST (UK) »
 ??? Hi,
I really hope that there is someone out there who can help me in tracing a missing relative!
He is CORRIE BAMPTON born in Eton in 1900, he had 2 brothers & 1 sister all of whom I know about but Corrie is a complete mystery!
After 1901 Cencus there is no record of him in BMDs, etc.
I did see a mention of the following:
1930 United States Federal Cencus
Name: Corrie Bampton
Spouse: H W
Birth: about 1883
Residence: 1930- city, New Haven, Conneticut

I know the birth range is alot but it has been known for people to exaggerate their age in the past.
If he died as a child surely there would be a record for him? Help, thanks>

Hi there,

Unfortunately the Corrie Bampton you have found in the US in 1930 is female (I think she's actually called Carrie, according to the census return).  She was born in Connecticut of an English father and a Canadian mother. H.W. Bampton is her husband.

Where have you looked? Have you looked through all the GRO index images from 1900 onwards?

The next BMD event may be well be a marriage and FreeBMD (or the Ancestry version of it) barely extends to a period when one might reasonably expect a marriage to occur.

For what it's worth, a C Bampton living at Slough appears in the telephone directories 1969-1972 (and not later).  This, of course, may be somebody else entirely.

Have you considered they he may have become a sailor?

There are many ships that list a C. Bampton born England  as being a crew member.
Most give his birth as approx. 1901 but with the sailings early in the year and his birthdate in September the age given on the transcription might not take that into account i.e. May 1919 his age would be 18 so they would put 1901 when in fact it would be 1900 as his birthday was in September.

The variety of crew lists show a C. Bampton 6 feet tall brown hair brown eyes  while others show a Charles Bampton 5 feet 4 inches 149 lbs.  I don't think these are the same sailor.

Make any sense?  It could be a long shot....I haven't check BMD for 1901 for a C. Bampton... just something to keep in mind.

Thanks Dollylee for the constructive advice.
I am currently now looking into it but would there be a death record for a sailor as so far I cannot find anything on Free BMD, FamilySeach, org or Ancestry.co.uk.
I have tried the Bmd records before I posted this request for help. THanks, Gill

Thanks for that Daisypetal,
I will look into that. There should be a record of him being in army somewhere. Again, thanks.
