New Topic - Seeking Julia Foley c1898 - c1903 in Midleton
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 01:10 BST (UK) »
I realize this could be an extremely long shot.  Appreciate any pointers possible.  Am looking for the birth record of my father's mother Julia Foley.  I believe she was born in Midleton, Ireland in approximately 1898 - 1903.  She moved to the US by herself when she was 18 years old.  Again, any help appreciated .. thank you ..

HI Ambley

If it is Ok can you tell us when and where your father was born as it may help track down Julia Foley.

Did she marry or was she single when she gave birth to your father?

Very much appreciate the responses to try and help me out  :) :)  I have some new and maybe better info.  It appears Julia Foley was born in 1890 in Midleton.  She came to the US possibly at the age of 16 (or so my folks think).   There also was some discrepency as to her age in that she may have married a younger man.  She married Roland Henry King we think in New York City.  Julia ended up working at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NY for many years then the St. Regis.  She work in the laundry.  Her father in Midleton was Patrick Foley.  My father Donald William King (Julia's son) was born in Schectady, New York on 2/28/1922. Again .. thank you so much for your assistance.

Hi kingsofcary

We now have a middle initial for Julia - which may be helpful in tracing her background........

Julia M FOLEY married Roland H KING on 5 May 1916 in Manhattan.
http://www.italiangen.org/predblist.stm

1910: Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Manhattan, New York
Laundress: Julia M FOLEY 17, unm,  b Ireland, parents b Ireland. Imm 1908

Because of Privacy, I won't list all the details of their children (your father and his siblings)  but this is briefly the 1920 and 1930 Census:

1920: New York City, New York
Head: Roland KING 25, b -----? am,  parents b NY, Occ: Schaefer? (shop)
Wife: Julia KING 24,  b Ireland, imm 1909, parents b Ireland, Occ: Housemaid (Home),
Children x 2
Boarder: Robert KING 23, unm, b NY, parents b NY, Occ: Clerk (office)
(cannot read Roland Snr's POB as written in his line, and in lines of his sons - it seems to indicate the place name is Mexican.....?? ----tica. or something?)

1930: Town of Colonie, Albany, New York
Pennsylbania Avenue - Maywood
Head: May F MICHAELS 57, marr (first when age 16), b NY, NY parents, occ: Boarders "Home"
Son Relative:*: Roland H KING 35, marr, Steam Fitter, Plumbing Shop, b NY, father b NY, mother b Ireland, first married when age 21  (so abt 1916)
Children x 4
The KINGS - initially written as Son, 3 Grandsons and 1 Grandau - which has been crossed out and replaced in each case, by the word relative.

Cheers

Passenger List - List of Alien passengers held for Special Enquiry
1908: Ship "Adriactic", Arrived NY on 17 Apr 1908,
Julia M FOLEY age 15
Nr of Persons: 1
Ex-Manifest Q41, nr 26
Reason for being held: L  P C (probably becasue of her age and travelling alone)
Looks like she was investigated, and then obviously  ;D  she was admitted:

LPC - means Likely Public Charge
http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/Manifests/bsi

Trying to find her on the manifest proper.....
I wonder if she came in on a false age and  possiibly different surname.......

Possibly she had no family, friends or prospects in America. Immigrants tended to require someone to vouch for them ... many Irish who had settled in America sent money home so that another member of the immediate family, or another relation, could afford the passage across the Atlantic.
